Flywheel identification help
So im slowly piecing together my car. Im finally getting to the part of cranking over the engine but i think i have a flywheel issue. So i have a brand new powermaster mini starter that i just put on (PWM-9000-10) and it is bolted to a 1973 400 block but even with 10 shims installed with it, the start will not engage. Its still not far enough down and is hitting the flywheel so im wondering if i have the wrong flywheel. This car was in pieces when i got to i cant say for sure where any of the parts came from. Is there some kind of numbers on the flywheel i can check or a way of measuring it to check? Its currently fully installed in the car so im hoping to not pull the transmission to check this out. Any information will help. Thanks guys.

Flywheel or flexplate?
Generally the outer diameter of the flywheel/flexplate are the same for most all years. (not up on the very early 60's or 50's though) The teeth count is 166 i believe. I would think the starter is not correct for a Pontiac if it doesn't engage?

Its a flywheel, like i said in my post and the starter is correct for a pontiac. Its brand new from summit, the part # is correct for a pontiac and it works on my spare block so i know its something with the flywheel. I was just hoping for some information on some kind of part # or stamping in the flywheel itself to help me identify what it is

61-64 big car wheels look like 65 and up but the ring gear is in a diff position as the early ones use a bell mounted starter.Tom

Here is a pic of the part numbers for flywheels.
The number may be one off on the flywheel, not sure it is an assembly. The number may be on the back of the flywheel.

2x what is said above - I ran into same issue, found out I had a big car flywheel (63MY I believe) trying to install on 73 400 with Muncie but found out gear teeth where about 1/2 out of line. Installed correct flywheel and no issue
