'72 Grand Prix rear axle..
I just busted up a rusty loaded '72 GP that sold new in Miami. Basic J model with 400 / and 10 bolt rear. Pulled the rear axle assembly and was surprised that the rear is the 8.2" I thought that '72 would have used the corporate 8.5 . It didn't appear to have been changed and the build sheet indicated a 3.08 ratio non posi which is what this axle is. I saved it anyway. They don't make them any more. Is this right ?

Can you post the build sheet?
The axle code on it would say what it came with?

The build sheet shows it came with a 3.08 non posi rear and since it is a 400 car it came with a 10 bolt axle. I was surprised that it came with an 8.2" rear for a '72. I thought that the corporate 8.5 was used across the board by this year. I saved it any way .

no 8.5's in Pontiac A or G bodies in '72.
in Gp's, with the 400 the 8.2 was standard, but the 8.875 12 bolt was optional. the 12 bolt was standard with a 455. |

73 was the change over year for the corp. 8.5. Plus there were 2 8.5 rear ends in 73 also but the 8.5 that was the odd ball was only used in the 1st few months of the build. I'm not sure when they stopped using it but it was designed like the older rear end & the outer bearing were the 4 bolt in type, & then they went to the C-Clip rear end in all of them . I had one of the 1st style rear ends in my 73 when I bought it new . but as a lot of the 8.5's it ended up blown up after about 30K miles & with that I've had 5 different rear ends in the car since new now. The last 3 went away when the pin that holds the idler gears in broke & let the idler gear slide out & jam into the rear end case.
