Default Intake Manifold Removal: Best Way to Drain Coolant from Engine

When removing an Intake Manifold, what is the best method for removing coolant from the engine so as to reduce a mess on the top end?

- Disconnect lower Radiator Hose (at Radiator) into a large container

or

- Drain engine coolant from pipe plug at lower rear RH side of block
(near Oil Filter).

Thanks.

Your radiator should have a petcock drain in the bottom somewhere, might be hard to see if you have a shroud.Remember to pull the cap when draining.Tom

What Tom said. Jack up the rear of the car slightly.

Just use the radiator petcock. Draining from the radiator is able to remove most of the coolant until the level drops to below the timing cover, roughly. At that point, you'll need to break loose the block drain plugs to drain the rest.

No need to do the block plug for an intake swap. Don't need fluid that low.

Right. It just needs to be lower than the level of the intake. Use that petcock on the radiator, and assuming the coolant is in good condition catch it in a clean bucket so you can reuse it.

For an intake I usually just use a siphon hose in the rad inlet and a 5 gal bucket.
