Looking at buying new leaf springs
As I'm working on the exhaust and making sure the tailpipes clear everything with the rear end hanging down and when its sitting at ride height. Looks like the drivers side spring sags more than the passenger side. I have always noticed the car has a lean to one side. But just accepted it. So now, im looking at replacing the leaf springs. There isnt a huge price difference from a stock replacement mono spring to the Calvert Split Monos. So I have 2 questions...
1.. Anyone running the split monos on a car that sees regular street miles, and is there any issues ? 2.. Do I buy the "stock height" or 1" lowering? I like the ride height of my car now and have read that when people replace the springs the ride height is higher due to the new leafs. Here are a couple pics for reference of how my car sits at rest. Notice the driver side tire is in the wheel well a little more. |

I went from stock mult-ileaf to stock height Calvert split-mono springs on my '68 and there was no height change.

Scott: I just install Calvert split mono leaf springs on my wife's 68 Firebird. I bought the first set part # 230-45 and found they were a little high. So I purchased the second set part # 230-44. I really didn't see much of a difference from the first set to the second set. Maybe dropped 1/2". I have a friend with a 67 Camaro who has the part # 230-43 and he says it's too low for his liking. I still think the car is too high in the back. I don't think there would be any issues on the street with these springs. We also run a dual adjustment QA1 shocks.

How are the split leafs on the street? Calvert told me I can’t run them on the street .

Maybe a touch stiffer at the same ride height..not sure why they said you can't run them on the street?

Thanks for the pics guys, I ordered the "stock height" springs. I guess if it sits too high I can always buy the Calvert Spacers and put them betwee the rear end and the spring. I do plan on some street driving, its not a daily driver, so I hope there are no issues. Did you guys notice a performance difference when switching? More consistent or easier to hook the car? I looked again at the pics i posted and noticed both my pics are the same side..lol..here is the drivers side. For reference

Send Calvert an email. ask about street use. I can't see any issues. Spring is a spring. Need proper shocks to control them. My thinking. Maybe that's there issue. Car looks awesome.

There HAS to be 1000's of cars running them on the street. I've never heard of complaints.
Maybe they just have to say that. |

My friend Charlie has them on his mainly street Charger. OD auto trans 500" 383 Hilborn stack EFI so far has not cracked in the 10s but has the mph to. Has A/C on it too! He uses a rear slide vs shackles-before Frieburger did it to the Mayhem Charger.
Picture is out in front of my shop and from the Calvert Racing catalog gallery. My 79 Camaro/IA has them and I have driven it on the street with them 1" drop and sits just right not too stiff

I know the street racer guy's don't like them for that.
I run old cheap slapper bar that clamp on with u-bolts I shim them for ride hieght where they mount front and rear and for tracktsion, Get that snubber against the spring and If you have the power your 60-foots will drop. Mine 60's in the low 1:40's and high 1:30's. Check out some leaf spring suspension site's. GT |

Not me. I did look at them and decided the mounting and whatever needs to be done wasn't worth it. I took a good look at the shackles at the back and I figured it allowed the spring to move back and forth pretty much the same.

The tech at Calvert didnt make any mention about them. But a friend asked me if I bought them to go along with the springs. I figure if it wont hook i can always add later.

Ya, A friend of mine ran his Camaro into the 9's this summer with Mono leaf and Caltracs, no sliders. He was fine with the shackles.

i recall hearing the "no street" thing for mono leafs was due to safety concerns... in an accident or other extreme situation they can break & let the rear end go free or sideways compared to multi leaf steel springs.
i was considering mono leafs for a car many years ago & thats what i was told by a few mechanics & racers regarding mono leafs on the street. but i know tons of guys use them on the street without any issues so could be one of those things where a company just makes the statement to cover their butts for IF it might happen. |

I put the stock height ones on mine a few years ago. Very happy with the street and track performance. A good double adjustable shock is a great thing to have to go along with the Caltrac springs and bars. Car is 3300 lbs race weight, 275/60R15 tire on an 8" wheel.

I'm going to buy the adjustable shocks from CalVert racing. After i get the new springs installed I will measure for static length of the shocks. They are not in the stock position so I want to make sure I get the right length shock. The leaf work gs are supposed to be here Monday.
I need to put myself and the car on a diet. Im at 3550 race weight, maybe 3600 now with the IA block. |
