Default What Heads Do I have?

The Firebird that I bought came with an all-iron 400. All of that stuff is going away in favor of an all-aluminum engine. So I'm trying to nail down the origins of the iron heads. Mike is going to flow-test them and figure out what valves and springs they have. Then they'll show up in the For Sale section. The numbers:

#62 castings
Date code on one of them is H298
Other date code is I058

Thanks,
Eric

They are a D port head cast in late 68 for the 1969 400/ 428 production run and mainly used on B body motors.

They have some 75 CCs of chamber volume if they are still on there factory valve job.

They have the standard big size valves and flow wise if stock produce on average 205 peak Intake cfm@28" of test pressure, and 158 to 160 cfm in the center two Exh ports with some 165 cfm on the end Exh ports if stock.

If VIN matched to car you should store it

The car Eric is referring to does not have original engine. It has been set-up as a drag race car for many years and is being converted to road race duty. Thus the lightweight engine package. The block and heads do not match and the neither match the body. Trying to properly ID the heads to advertise them accurately. The 62 castings were used in a wide variety of applications including Ram Air III 400's. Just want the new owner, whoever they may be to know what they will be getting. These heads have been ported, possibly professionally. That's why I am going to flow a cylinder. They look pretty good at a glance. So no numbers matching stuff to worry about.

I LOVE # 62's....good bolt on fix for many 400's. Actually using a set on my 455 build (with 18 cc dish pistons) Mine cc'd at 75 with the new valves and a little...very little work to unshroud the intake.

#62s were the cast iron heads ported by Butler's porting guy back in 1995 (260 cfm) that went 6.96
in the quarter with Twin Turbos. Never had an issue with the cast iron heads with the Pontiac 406 engine.
Be interesting to see what they flow on a SF600 flow bench.

If you can't make power with the #62s on a 406, you have the wrong turbos, wrong head guy, and wrong tuner.

Eric, I think your road race car will be exceptional when you get it finished.

I've had and used multiple sets of the 62's over the years on both my cars and customers. I'd CC the heads to check chamber volume though. I've seen untouched virgin heads come in at 78 CC's, which is great for today's gas. I've primarily found this head on 69' model 400's with automatic transmissions and A/C.

The car is a '75 Formula. The previous owner CLAIMS it ran a 10.90 but I have no way to confirm that. I bought it for the pristine body, good roll bar, welded in subframe connectors and Ford 9" rearend.....and no rare collector stuff to worry about. The iron engine has to go. And the Turbo 400 is getting replaced by a Super T10.

Cool, I was curious if was a set I sold many years back that were ported nice I ran. But after looking up the old post I see my old ones were a different date (J298 & K198) .. Funny thing was back in the early years of my Pontiac'n my buddy scored a beater 75 Formula project we ended up bailing on and it also had a 400 in it that was actually a 78 W72 XX block and it had a set of good #62 heads from 69

I guess I will CC a chamber as well so we know how much they have been cut and what the valve job may have done to them.

Thanks for your vote of confidence Tom. Mike and I have pretty good range of knowledge for building Pontiac engines and the chassis/suspension stuff leans heavily on Herb Adams knowledge. I still have a copy of his catalog/book from the 80's (with all its comprehensive advice) and I met with him at the T/A Nationals to get his direct thoughts. Should be a fun ride when it's finished.
