55 years of oxidation, scratches, and rock chips wet sand & polish off but not the spider cracked lacquer paint. Will just call that character;-) Nice to see the color come back!

I can't view any of the pictures you posted, although i would like to.
[ outdated software and browser ]

If you post pictures directly to this site, they will stay archived/viewable for as long as PY Forum exists. Third party picture hosts have left lots and lots of dead links all over this site from where they always eventually go defunct or change their policy.

Sounds like a really great survivor you obtained.
Big Congrats on that !

Finished color sanding and polishing the car, but still some detail work to do in the jams and in the engine bay. All the top panels (hood, roof, & trunk) the paint was very cracked and It felt like 100 grit sand paper.

I started by de-waxing the car and taping the chrome & trim. Next touching up any chips and scratches with a color matched Nightwatch Blue lacquer paint. Then wet sanded with 2500g and followed by 3000g. The wet sanding smooth the paint and help remove 55 years of tree sap and bird **** stains. Next compounding and polishing with 3M Perfect-it. It is a 3 step system with 3 different foam pads. The lacquer paint cuts, buffs, and polishes fast and easy with it!

The last step was 2 coat of a color matched wax (dark blue) this would help fill the small spider cracks.

All this was time consuming but the result was worth it to save the original paint.

Thanks
Pat

I must say, your car came out beautifully. What I was most amazed by, was how much color had been lost which was evident after removing the front hood emblem. Fantastic job!!

Keepat. that is one gorjeous 66. Same color as the 66 Tempest Custom I had, but the paint on mine wasn't as great looking as yours.

Making progress on the new shop. All the electrical work is complete just waiting for BG&E our local power company to hook up the meter. I was concerned that the slab was a little thin for the two post lift so I opted to cut two 4’x 4’ holes and had two 5’x 5’x 14” slabs poured. Also insulated both of the 12’ x 12’ doors. Cabinets and lift will be here first of the year.
Thanks
Pat

That effort was definitely worth it and I admit, I wouldn't have done it out of fear of causing damage. Amazing result you got from your effort and skill. Using quality materials like 3M always helps too. I have used 3M glaze with great results. Your GTO came out excellent and thanks for the photos.
