Default 400 Help!

Howdy everyone,

I have a 79 TA with a 301 currently in it. I recently bought a 400 to swap in to it. I was curious if anyone knew a good replacement intake and carb set up that will still work with the shaker. I'll be running the stock heads on it, but I was hoping to get an aluminum intake and matching carb for it. Thank you in advance! I appreciate the help!

-Mike

I have also used a performer, not the performer RPM they are a bit to tall to use without mods.

Also I hope you are aware that your 301 accessory brackets will not work with you 400?

repro RA/HO. performer. holley street dominator. or the repro versions of the HSD under many names like tomahawk, or some other current names from pro products are the same & will fit under the shaker but these are single plane intakes if that matters.

any of these intakes will be fine for a stock or mild cam'd 400. or the RPM will work with one of the drop base air cleaners but probably overkill unless for stock.

I run a performer with a quadrajet on a 78. I think the shaker might tilt back just a small bit but nothing that will effect how the hood closes. It is very hard to notice any difference versus a stock intake.

I also have a Holley Street Dominator on another 78. I think the intake might place the carb/shaker back slightly. You really have to be careful and make sure that the shaker is centered when closing the hood to make sure that it does not get into the hood.

Not sure if the 301 Shaker is the same since the block is a short deck.

My 81 TA I have a 400 in with a performer. Swapped off the Turbo hood and put on a Shaker. Performer is 1/4" higher in front and 1/2 lower in back than Factory, so a hair different angle.

You 301 Alt/PS brackets/pulley need to be swapped also.

The 301 shaker is not the same. It’s a 1 year only item I believe. 301 shaker sits about 1/4 lower so it does not fit on the normal 400 w72 air cleaner.

Use a factory intake. Your not going to gain anything other than a crappy look.

What's your 400 from? If it's from a similar model year as your T/A, it's probably got the 10003395 intake, which is decent enough to use. If you want, you can block off the EGR, just make sure to add a jet size to your carb.
