Default You pretty much need the exact size for these.

I'd be concerned about damaging a compression ring using a taper that was even .0005 larger.

However, if the actual 'exit diameter' of the tapered compressor is the same or a tiny bit smaller than the actual bore size in your block, you should be OK.

Maybe one of the professionals will chime in. I just play a Pontiac mechanic on TV......

Good luck!

Do you already have that compressor, will it tighten down on the skirt of a piston?

I have a 4.155 tapered bore rung compressor and a adjustable tapered ring compressor with he big hose clamp. It goes something like 4.12 to 4.25 or close to that.
The adjustable one is far superior.
The fixed one is not tight on the piston and the adjustable on you can make tight as you want. There is a gap from the side of the piston leaving the rings to stick out a bit on the fixed one. No way around that. I ordered it thinking it was the best and used my old Summit adjustable.
The thinner the rings the more it matters having it tight.

Ok sounds good. Will get it done with my adjustable compressor. I don’t think it’s worth $70 for the 4.150 tapered compressor

Ive used this adjustable tapered from summit racing and worked great. I do have a fixed one for the 4.350 for my other engine and very nice but was a more common size and wasn't too bad on price.

it works great, use a little trans fluid on the skirt of the piston only, adjust compressor, and should tap down pretty easy. if using stock style rods protect the bore by putting tubing over the bolts, if using eagle type, still be careful with the bore obviously. turn the block in either case so the deck is parallel with the floor, gravity is your friend and will keep the rod in the center of the bore and be easier to be ''careful''

I put Lucas oil treatment on the piston skirts. Very sticky.

I know there is no other way even with all of our high tech these days to go about installing Pistons with the rings on them, but it's still pretty barbaric!

In a well lit shop with the block on a stand is one thing. But my 1917 Buick manual talks about changing pistons from the bottom (no crank counterweights in the way), engine in the car, using a cut up tin can as a ring compressor!
