Default Too cold to race?

When is it to cold to race? There is a BOP race at Atco tomorrow but we are looking at a high temp of 49. I am concerned with the track temperature and traction. I am running radials. Don't want to waste my time if it will not hook.
I have been detuning the car all year to go 10.00. I took the restricture plate out and 200lbs of ballast out. I want to see what it will do all out. Hoping to be in the 9.7's.

The tracks here in the north country will usually run if Temps in the low to mid 40s. The key is sunshine. If you have some sun and good track prep, you should make some good runs!!

I am glad that Atco is still around., no less open this time of year!

That being said I have only been to Atco twice at this time of year and I can relay a few things.
How well you hook overall ( not just at lunch) besides the track prep ( which Atco does well) is highly depend on the time your runs for elemination take place ( as in direct over head Sun on the track) and the cooler the track the more you need slicks!

On weekends this time of year and especially this weekend after some rain on Friday, once your making late day runs after 3:30 dampness sets in pretty fast near the end of the track where the prep ends, and I have seen a lot of cars WITH slicks Loose the race up there where control was lost and the driver had to get off the throttle. Especially if there’s a cross wind that kicks up!

Unless your experience running on these types of fall days, or want experience in doing such , or your just happy to call / see the whole day as being a test & tune, then I would stay home and save what would the days cost to be there and apply it to next season!

Also you could just go there without the car and take notes on how to make the best of the day if your planing on going there next fall.

You don’t need to have a car at the track to learn stuff about racing a car!

As mentioned earlier, having some good sunlight for heating the track will be key. If you'll have that, and your just looking for a personal best, I'd go for it.

Motors love days like this, but if normally you’re on the edge of overpowering the amount of traction you can muster out of the car then it will be a disappointing day!
Be sure that on a day like today you make your first time shot 3 steps fatter on your jetting, or at least 2 step fatter if you know your on the edge of being safe like that anyway!

You don’t want to pound out rod bearings, and 30 degree temp swings like we have today is a great way to do that!

Congrats Mike! Here in Gainesville we run year round and the best days are the late fall and winter days that see a high around 50 with lots of sunshine. But track prep is the key. Curt's car has run a string of 11.40s on those cool dry days with no traction issues and then in warmer weather making less power blow the tires off as the track condition deteriorates and the sticky stuff goes away.

I would think cold temps and plenty of sunlight would be the best combo. Tires would love the sun, intake manifold would love the cold.

No problem hooking with the radials. Ran the 9.74/120 letting off at the 1000'. I am not legal to go below 10.00, no license or chassis cert. I have been detuning it all year to run 10.00 index. I wanted to run it to the 1/8 to get an idea of how fast it would go. Best 1/8 mile pass was 6.04/111.9 with a 60' of 1.29. Slowest pass was 6.06.
second time shot ran it to the 1/8 and coasted to a 10.32/94. lost first round letting off at the 1/8 coasting to a 10.25/100. I was just playing around and didn't mind being a duck. I ran a 6.0 and a 1.29 60'. I am happy putting the car away. Have to get my license next year because that was fun. I think it should be a high 9.5 to a low 9.6.

You are making some steam with your ride, very cool. Stock block right ?
I will be in the same boat this spring. Trying to get a idea how fast it will go while keeping it 10.00
Going to use MT Bracket Radials myself.

I ran at Atco one year when it was in the mid-40's with a "light wind" (10-15 MPH bursts) on an overcast day and it was not much fun at all...especially when trying to keep nitrous bottles warm.

Yes NA. It's your basic combo, stock block e-heads that flow 330, victor, 1050 holley, th400 with 8" converter. 4.10 gear in a 12 bolt. Suspension is all stock. Moved rear lower trailing arm down 3/4" on the rear. Double adjustable coil overs on the back and stock replacement shocks on the front. Car is 3200lbs with me in it.
This combo took years to get dialed in especially the suspension. I never ran it all out in all the years I have been racing it. I am always trying to go 10.00 for index races. I never thought it would run a 6.0 in the 1/8.

Nice times Mike! My 1/8 is around 6.4-6.5 and best of 10.25 1/4 running about 70lbs heavier than you and a ~9.6 final drive ratio in 1st gear.

My goal is to ultimately hang right around 10.0 with another 100lbs added to the car with full exhaust and seats, so about 3,370. Figured I need another 50-60hp to accomplish that. Maybe an upgrade from the 310cfm heads is in my future....

It's a custom ATI MRT tree master converter. It was suppose to be one of their tights 8" converters. Stall right around 5000. I do leave with a trans brake. Found that the car hooks a lot better hitting off the trans brake at 3800rpm's than foot braking. The suspension likes the shock off the trans brake.

I should have dropped the exhaust off while I was at it, but didn't have time.

It is amazing how much a restrictor plate can cut HP. I usually run a plate with 1.600 holes and 200 lbs in the trunk.

I love the fact this car is tagged and insured so I can drive it on the street. It is not a gutted race car. But the 12-1 compression limits how far I can drive it. Next rebuild am going to lower comp. for pump gas and still try for 10.00in the summer.
