Default HPP Feature on 71 Lucy Blue 3-Speed Judge

Beautiful 71 Judge featured in the April Issue of HPP. Lucy Blue, Ivory Cordova top and Ivory interior, AC, PS, PB, 3-speed, rear window defrost. One of only 11 71 Judges built with a 3-speed and thought to be one of only 4 that still remain. It's owned by a guy in Florida named Troy Allison - anybody know him or know this car?

The article has one wierd note. In the discussion on the engine it says this of the restoration by the second owner:

"He also rebuilt the non-original motor to stock specs, retaining the block it had when delivered, the crank and rods, and installing 0.030-over, TRW, cast-aluminum pistons. The heads and carb were also rebuilt and are said to be original, as is the intake." (Underline added by me)

If it had its original block, heads, intake and carb - how is it a non-original motor?? Is that just a typo or am I reading it wrong?

Regardless, it is a beautiful car and a neat story.

BJ

Great write-up and the best pix of a 71 Judge I've seen in a long time. The ivory backdrop was very cool for a nicely restored 71 Judge!

To answer your question on ownership and restoration. Jon Wacholtz was second owner and restored car in '93. He bought it from the original owner Leroy Judge (how cool is that) from AZ, and he was part of the USAF when he ordered the Judge in late '70.

Jon who is a great guy BTW restored, and rebuilt the NOM engine that was in car when he got the car. Article doesn't say what is in the car? But, it must be correct for car to receive such high points when it won gold?

The current owner was third owner after Jon or fourth owner, and a retired GM engineer.
Great looking car in Lucy Blue and Ivory guts.

IMO, it is cool to have a 3-speed, but in 71 the M-22 rules!

Agreed Mike - some of the best pictures of a 71 I've see as well. Any idea whether the current owner is a member here? I'd love to have some more photos of that car for my screen saver collection.

I'm sure finding a correct WL 455 HO coded block for a 3-speed and dated correct for that Judge would also be very difficult to find.

BJ, I met Troy in Oct. 07 at an all GM show that was sponsored by NPD in Ocala Fl. Real nice guy with a few cool Pontiac's. He was looking for a '71 Judge at that time and actually had a line on a couple of cars. Like you, if I remember correctly, he was specifically looking for a Lucy Blue car.
I think I may still have his business card, I'll see if I can find it and I'll forward his contact info.

A friend has a 71 Judge with it's original 3 speed. I didn't realize they were such a low production #.
2 of the 4 found, 2 left to find!

Here is a scan of the "Centerfold" picture. Sorry, my scanner bed was a little too small to scan the whole two-page photo but for those of you who do not suscribe to HPP, here is a picture!

i am sure the white back drop has something to do with it, but that lucerne blue looks awfully light.

Just got my issue in the mail this afternoon. Agree - great article and pictures. The pics in the magazine are a bit darker than the scan. Some decent "page time" for the '71's!!

Default '71 Judge

When I purchased the car the original block was gone but it had the original heads, intake and carburetor. I restamped the block to WL. Since purchasing the car Troy has found the original block in Arizona and it is being delivered to him. I was never told that the original block was available. The color of the car is too light for Lucerne Blue (it matched Adriatic Blue) and i told the body shop that at the time it was painted and they repainted the car but it came out to kite the second time and I wanted to get the car done so I let it go. Troy lives in Palatka, FL and can be reached at 386-328-9575. Thanks for all the good comments.

Thanks Jon! That is one nice car, and with the original engine even better!! Finding a correct WL is luck, but finding the original matching WL is horseshoe up the arse good luck!

Jon:
Did you find the build sheet when you did the restoration? I'd love to see a copy if you've got it.

As for the discussion of the engine in the article, I guess the author meant that you retained the block that was with the car when it was "delivered" to you, not when it was "delivered" new. Thanks for explaining that. I agree with Mike that finding that original-to-the-car WL block is nothing short of a miracle! That would make a great story as a follow-up to this article!

Default 1971 Judge

BJ: I did find the build sheet when I restored the car and gave it and a full picture album of myself and the bodyshop restoring the car to the buyer but it has disappeared. There has been as least 8 owners of the car since I restored it in 1994-1995. Doesn't seem as though that stuff is as important to some as to others. I need to contact the buyer to try and find it. Troy has contacted me about trying to find it but the buyer to whom I sold it to will not talk to him about it. Jon

Very cool Judge with an interesting history. Thanks for chiming in, Jon.

How cool is it that the original block has been found?!?

I too think that the color is MUCH closer to Adriatic Blue than Lucy Blue. Not dissing the car in any way, just my .02.

I've never understood why some folks are like that - not sure what purpose is served by not wanting to help? Anyhow, thanks for filling in some blanks on a great car.

3spd....Hmmmm.....I had one in a 69 once......might be rare but it can be rare sitting in a box in the garage with a nice m22 in its place between the seats.....a car like that with a 3 peed is like a 3 legged dog ;-)

Ditto! Great analogy - Could not agree more and that is the absolute first mod I would make if I owned this jewel. Keeping the tri-pod in a box for future generations and having fun with an M22 in the meantime doesn't detract from the provenance of the car at all.
