Obviously the .30 carbine round doesn't have the distance that the 5.56 M16/AR15 round does. More grain but less muzzle velocity. 100 yards still a decent pattern.

You can hold one of my ARs even a shorty 16" barrel and collapsible stock and feel how much lighter a M1 carbine is,sure feels heavier than 8lbs but the M1 defintiely feels lighter. Add 6-8 drop in parts and the ATF boys will be on you unless you have a Class III.

Ron as you know the history of the Armalite gun definitely had jam issues initially in Vietnam. The added forward assist and a few other changes helped that out. Depending on the ammo the bolt needs routine cleaning as you know. The M1 carbine as wel as most of the current H&K use gas piston and rod system. Teh one for the AR/M16 is shown in the January 2008 Guns & Weapons For Law Enforcement article on the new DCS carbine and mentions these problems even currently in Iraq with these weapons incliding the new M 4 version needing more intense cleaning time. Can be kept jam free just more maintenance than the other design. I've got 3 so I like them, just alot tighter clearances.

FYI a close friend has some patents on an addition to the gas tube to store pressure to blow out a jammed round or water in the tube system. Many vets that are postal workers that ate in his restaurant discribed those problems to him. Bush Sr. and Baker are in partners with him, maybe why Clinton killed the deal back then.

You can't find a much worse environemet for a rifle than the Mekong jungle. We cleaned our weapons often and only loaded 18 rounds into the magazines. There were issues with spring pressure causing jams. There were only a few problems with the M16 that I knew of and those were caused by poor maintenance or failure to load only 18 rounds into the magazine.

The first issue of M16's did have problems but I was issued mine in February 1968 and it was a second generation M16. Over the course of three years I carried a number of different weapons but always knew the M16 was a great weapon.

Thanks Skip...you are most welcome. Myself along with thousands of others appreciate your thoughts and sentiments. Firing my M16 was not my first priority. I was an Artillery Officer and as such was an Artillery Forward Observer with an Infantry Company for seven months. I was in the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta....aka IV Corps. My primary function was of course....shooting Artillery. I was also responsible for helicopter gun ships, air strikes and med-evac(Dust-Off) helicopters. I was told, just a few minutes before going on my very first operation....that firing my M16 was not my priority...if however it came time to fire an M16 there would be plenty of them laying around for me to choose from. I, thank goodness, never had to choose from one laying around. However...when I did have to fire my M16 it never let me down.

had a hard time trying to get people to understand it might be a 30 round mag, just don't put over 25 in it.loaded one with 30,locked the bolt to the rear and told the guy to hit the bolt release, jam!like you said spring pressure.after that they started to listen.did my time in the sand,90-91 and feb 04-oct 05.used WD40 instead of CLP for oil, with some trying the new grafphite lubes that were coming out.never had a problem out of our 16's,but alot of units didn't know squat about how to make a 50 cal run.timing and head space, timing and head space.

i have a problem, not only do i collect to many pontiacs,i collect old military weapons.love my 1944 M1carbine,1940garand,1944garand,1917-1917,1919-1903,1884springfield-trapdoor,4 1911's,1917,1918,1943,1944 all with all with property US on them,1939 mauser,1944arasaka then a bunch of new stuff.

now back to pontiacs.at what horse power level do you guys go to the aftermarket blocks?trying to plan for the next step down the road.

Supposedly the "green" mag followers jam less than the "black" ones. My new Colt teflon balck ones jam when there are only 2 shells in them. I always wonders if on the upper and bolt carrier some of the DFL coatings might be of benefit too.

My hat is off to all those in the sand today. One of my son's classmates from football is a Ranger somewhere even his parents don't know where. Youngsters today don't know the sweat even us stateside guys had with lottery numbers etc back then. Better not get caught without a draft card either. Friend in Jr. High ran away for awhile to LA but got picked up for no draft card (big kid) and came back home.

HP goal for my IA 2 enough to push a 3600 lber to 10.0s in the Texas heat

I have owned both blocks.Scott Roberts had his MR-1 checked against factory blueprints the same place I took my IA-2 to have it checked. The machinest stated the IA-2 parameters X and Y were excelent. The largest variant was .007 on 1 cyliner from crank centerline to block deck. The MR-1 block he checked was much worse. There were some other issues as well.I would buy the IA-2 based on my personal experiance.Understand this block is a race block and will need preped per its application.Brian

i graduated highschool in 76 just after the draft was stopped, but was old enough to understand what was going on when it was in full swing.a kid in my class lost his dad flying an OV-10 bronco as a foward air controller.one of the reasons i spend my time in the service is to give back to all those that have gone before.i have so much respect for their sacrifice.

do a yahoo or google search for (cmp)their website sells garands.if you get to ohio i think you could get better prices.i did guard duty at the NRA national matchs in 2003 at Camp Perry Ohio, home of the cmp store.we could go thru racks full of garands and 03's checking numbers and dates just like on these cars.my 1944 is all original, the 1940 is either 1940 or parts from a 1946 rebuild.
