#1 is the OPGI repro; #2 & 3 are from the eBay ad for the 1961 I mentioned; #4 is from an old ad I found for a 1964 GTO canister; #5 is a canister currently on eBay as from a 59-60 SD (and is very similar to one I have)...

In 1961, tripower cars all had vacuum actuated linkage, mechanical linkage was only an over-the-counter option. As a result, the canister was needed for actuation of the linkage. (My car doesn't have power steering or brakes either.) I think this was the case for other years as well.

Didn't know vacuum linkage was standard on ALL 61 tripowers. Here's a couple of pictures of my car from the early 90s. (it hasn't been out of the garage since 1994). Car still looks as good, sure wish I did

thanks....the 61 example is from the same 61 4 dr I also referenced. I can tell it's the same car from the rubber piece on the left snorkel to keep it from rubbing on the incorrect upper radiator hose and the stamp on the firewall above the steering column. You picture is better than the one I found, showing the mounting bracket going around the can, rather than being attached (2 separate "feet") on the bottom like the one I have. I showed the can I have with someone who has a 59-60 unit and he says they are different. After looking at your 63-64 example I now tend to think that is what I have. The same guy says he will send me good photos of a 62 canister. If so, I'll post it.

This reminds of another situation where two part options were both correct.

Different vendors/suppliers, different final assembly plants, production deadlines all conspire and cause variations.

The reason these cans are mounted different is because the fender skirts are different.

You got it. And every plant does things differently. As part of my job, I visit vehicle assembly plants and I know, first hand, there is NO absolutely correct way to assemble a car. It varies with time built, worker, available parts, etc.

I have a unmolested 62 Catalina Tri-Power, 4 speed with standard brakes. I want power brakes. I finally found a 62 factory booster but now need a vacuum canister.
Does anyone have suggestions in finding one?

I recently purchased one from this forum by placing a wanted ad. Had a very nice one on my door step in about a week. Reasonable price too. They are out there. 61-62 are the same. Little square canister.
