Default Parking Brake Cable Waaayyyy Too Short - What Am I Missing Here???

Swapped out all the old parking brake cables for new in my 68 Lemans convt. Originally 350/ 2 sp auto, now 455/TH400. Rear diff is still a factory 10 bolt with original drum brakes. New cables are all from Inline Tube.

It's been a few months since I removed the original parking brake, but I'm pretty sure it's routed correctly. Since it's a TH400, the cable is routed through the crossmember. I'm running the cables above the exhaust, and I'm not getting any interference with anything.

However, now that it's all together, it's about 6" too short, and I have the cable adjusted as loose as possible. I can't get anywhere close to running the cable on the factory hook on the top of the crossmember, so I just stuck it in a lower position on the crossmember. I'm also using the hook supplied by Inline Tube, and it's a few inches longer than the original.

The long center cable is 53" long; if I had one that was about 60" long, I'd probably be good.

I could leave the hook in the wrong spot, adjust it and call it good, but it's bugging me that it's not routed correctly.

Any thoughts?

To me it looks like the 'big hook' shown in the 777.jpg is in the wrong place. Notice how much closer mine is to the driveshaft and notice how much less bend is put into the cable by the hook.

Yes, as I tried to explain below, the hook is absolutely in the wrong place, but I had to put it there so it could reach the cable. Otherwise, it would be several inches too short.

First thing I see is that the cable should go above the crossmember (near the floorboard) and not through it…at least that is how I remember it…

It actually is supposed to go through the crossmember on TH400 cars, but not on manual trans cars.

I seen your post on the Pedal Assembly and wondering how you have that routed, if somehow incorrect it could be cutting you short, hard to tell from your photos the exact symmetry and angle. If the Pedal Assembly cable is correct and it turns out to be the long one maybe contact Inline Tube and inquire about length and application.

To give a idea for the length, location and symmetry.

For reference, a pic of the manual trans configuration.

Thanks for the pictures. That's how mine is routed. I'm going to give Inline Tube a call today.

Fixed it. I had two problems -- rod was too short and I had put it in the wrong hole....

I used the longer hooked rod that was in the Inline Tube kit and put it in the hole that was closer to the center of the crossmember.

Geometry looks great now.

Thanks for all the input!

Thanks for the feedback, nice to know the Inline Tube kit is legit.

Would like to pick your brain for a moment
Is your cable thats coming from pedal the same as the ST300?

Many years ago(about 37) I swapped my ST300 in my 67 for a 200-4R.
I moved the crossmember on the frame to same location the TH400 uses
but kept the same ST300 crossmember .
From what I remember the TH400 used a different E brake cable in front.

Does this kit fix all that or just make the old front cable work?

Damn good questions.

My car originally had a 350/ST300/2.78 10 bolt. Now it's 455/TH400/3.90 10 bolt. I'm using a TH400 crossmember. I don't recall how well the original cables fit with the TH400, but I removed them a few years ago, so I can't recall.

Looks like the kits that Inline Tube sells have two flavors - manual trans/TH350 or TH400. Your ST300 cables should be the same as the manual trans/TH350, right? I'm guessing the TH400 has a different length on the front cable, and I'm thinking that's what the 200R4 needs, so that might be your fix.
