Default Differences in quarter window roller plate

Going through my parts and noticed a difference in the roller plates for the quarter windows. Curious why GM made the change.

The bottom plate in the picture is from a 1970 GTO and the back roller has a spring to preload the roller. The top plate in the picture is from a 1972 Lemans and it has no provision for the spring.

Anyone know why they eliminated the spring? What does the spring even do?

Thanks
