I recently replaced the trunk drain rubber plugs. I noticed there are two additional holes near the tail light housings that are open. They are roughly half the size of the drain plugs, so about 1/2" in diameter.

I don't see any plugs for these holes on vendor sites for sale. Any ideas?

Should they have rubber plugs? Pictures attached.

I believe the answer is: They are for your back-up lights. The feed wire to them goes through those holes and a gray rubber grommet that is on the back-up light wire fits in there. Hope that helps, Paul

IIRC there is a third hole under the trunk latch for the tag light.

This topic brings up another point I've been wondering about. I purchased this car about 3 years ago. The previous owners claims it's mostly original.

I was looking at replacement rear bumpers recently (mine has a small dent) and noticed the replacement options all show back-up lights. But my current bumper does not have back-up lights.

In 67, was it possible to have a bumper without back-up lights? Or perhaps my bumper was replaced at some point.

My '67 has back-up lights...the lemans and tempest flavor did not..the backups were part of the taillight assy.

I forgot to mention, I have PHS docs for this car, so I'm confident it's a real GTO.

But I'll assume the bumper was replaced at some point with a non-GTO bumper.

The '67 GTO factory leads on each light unit will have a grommet on the wire that is pushed up into the hole
when feeding the wire into the trunk. Then connections are made into the taillight hardness.

Thanks Jeff. It's all making sense now. When I was working on my wiper motor recently, I noticed blue/black 2-wire coming through the firewall that was cut. I couldn't figure out what it could be because everything seemed to be working on the car...except the wipers. (bad motor replaced, now working.)

Looking through parts needed for backup lights and one that came up was the blue/black extension harness. (2-wire from under dash to engine bay... and suppose went down to trans area.)

Dash end of wire is still connected to light-green/dark-green wire plug.

Looks like there used to be backup lights on this car. And looks quite expensive to recover that feature.

Ames sells a complete kit for reverse lights for 67(L165Y $125)......I just bought this kit and it is complete.

I guess you can buy all of those parts if you want everything to be "correct" but you could just hook up a simple toggle switch under the dash.
