Default Courtesy lights

Would someone happen to have a pic of the foot well courtesy light assembly or possibly verify if these are correct? I’ve seen so many different options listed 68-72, that I don’t know what is correct. I recent sold my ‘69 A Body and can’t remember.

They were pulled out of my current ‘68 and I need need to source new ones. Not overly in need of a perfect match... but the ones I’m finding vary from stamped steel brackets to various plastic housings.

Thanks!

Btw- the dome lens is the standard opaque white with the ribs in the center, correct?

I don't believe the 68 A body had under dash courtesy lights, Just the single upper dash mounted one.
For the Coupe/4 door/wagon this is a manually operated map light. To convert to a courtesy light as found on the convertible, you need to connect the switch side terminal on the light fixture to the spare white wire lead from the headlight switch.

Ok thanks OG. That makes sense of why I can’t find anything. I still need to track down the map light (non-ac car) that fits in the underside of the upper dash.

One other question... regarding the kick panels. Is it true that the ‘68’s have a single knob? I see many with 2 knobs for airflow, but I seem to remember hearing about only 1 with a ‘68.

Thank you

I collected a few lower ctsy lamps from 69, 70, and perhaps a G-body. Never did install them into the 68 due to lack of need, simple mounting with ground.

Plastic lamp case bracket doesnt ground.
Metal socket in flat sheet metal was the one i'd use but something happened during an install where i punted.

Correct, 1 knob.

Thanks guys. If they weren’t there to begin with I’ll leave it be and save myself at least one chore.

Thanks again for the help!

Under dash map lite for 68 is available from a couple places, inline tube is one.

On 69 you had a single under dash courtesy light (Metal bracket-two wire harness), on AC cars you had instead two lights, one at each end with the same brackets ( the passenger side one connected to the AC plenum rather than the dash structure. The assembly manual seems to indicate 8 track cars also got the 2 bulb set up.

So the center courtesy dash light does not come on with the doors on the hardtop/ coupes? Is it still the same light fixture as the convertible?
Mine has a 12V & (-) light switch spade connectors, then grounds to the dash through one of the grounding screws for the manual slide switch.

I suppose this makes sense as there is a roof light.

The 69 full-size is a similar set up to the 68 A bodies. No underdash lights but a hand switch controlled reading lamp on the dash that on convertibles also serves as a courtesy lamp.

In the full-size 69’s it’s the same light assembly for convertibles as closed cars. It has two different connector blades on it; all cars use the 12 battery power (orange wire always live) with the thumb switch providing the ground to turn on the light. but convertibles also have a second connection which is the ground switch wire (off-white) from the door jam switches and headlamp switch that provide a ground when a door is opened or when the rheostat bezel on the headlight switch is turned past the detent.

In my opinion this set up is not great on convertibles because the map light simply doesn’t provide enough light in the footwell area compared to having extra bulbs under the dash like the 69 A body set up.

The operation of the 68 switch is the same as North described for the 69 models. And its the same switch for coupes and convertibles.
I believe the base Tempest was the only 68 A body without a Map light..

Recently reading a 69 Canadian model (cheviacs) brochure and noticed that the cheapest full-size car (strato-Chief) had no door jam switches so the dome light had to be turned on manually with the headlight switch. Even the next model up (Laurentian) only had a door jam switch on the drivers door! You see some of this still in 69 American models; the Bonnevilles were the only 4 door models that had switches for the rear doors as well.

I put the convertible floor lamps from PY with LED's. Love the light output specially at night and they don't get hot.
