Lead popping out of upper quarter
Hi everyone,
The passenger quarter at the roof of my '74 Firebird is bulged out like the leaded seam is failing. I have some body and paint experience and would rather do the repair by myself. The car has an older but still decent driver paint job on it, and I'd rather not go through the expense and time of painting the whole car. Can anyone advise me on paint blending in this area? There aren't any really good break lines on the back of these Firebirds, so any advice would help (other than taking it in somewhere). Thanks!

Rust or delamination. Where you are from, I'm going with rust. Either way, it needs to be removed, the area cleaned up or repaired and refilled.

I would agree. Bulging or cracked lead will almost always have under lying rust.

Get the lead out and clean and etch the metal. Then epoxy. Then short strand fiberglass/ bondo mixture. Paint? Well red is tough, so have a paint match gun used to get a good match. If its base / clear you might be able to get a perfect repair. I have done a "back half" paint job to remedy this before on single stage paint jobs.

It's a single stage paint job...I'll have to see what's under there, but I'm not too worried about getting the rust out; I just want to get close on the paint. We'll see how it goes! I'll tear into it this summer.
