‘64 Spinners on 15” Wheels
Hi all, I’m doing a ‘64 convertible project and converting to 4-wheel disk brakes. The problem is I REALLY want to run the ‘64 spinner hubcaps. Anyone got any suggestions? Have custom steel wheels made ? Chrome them afterwards ? Anyone out there accomplished anything similar ? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks Eric

Get brakes that are compatible with 14” wheels.
These caps already are already hard to keep on a 14” wheel, I can imagine the problems you’d have with 15” wheels modified to accept them. Plan your brake choice around the spinners and 14” wheels, not the other way around would be my advice. |

‘64 Spinners on 15” Wheels
Are there four wheel disc brake kits that work on 14 inch wheels? If so I didn’t realize that was an option

Most certainly the front brakes are easily done using factory 11” disc brakes.
For the rear disc brakes you’re going to need to do some research, I would think there are options available possibly also using GM factory components (Cadillac Seville?). Are rear discs absolutely necessary for your project? The easy way to upgrade the stock 9.5” rear drums would be to swap to 11” station wagon drum brakes that are a bolt-on. You’re going to have more than adequate stopping power with factory 11” components.

Trim ring
I used the 14” spinner caps on a 64 I had with 15” wheels.
It’s an old hot rodder trick. Problem is I don’t remember which Ford trim ring ( 1940 Ford I think) Put the trim ring on then the cap on top of the ring. Ring was a repro and readily available. I know it works, you don’t notice it at a glance. And they fit tight and did not fly off during spirited driving. Hood luck. Check a hot rod forum. For advice. |

All 14" wheels should not be treated equally. The GM 14x7 or aftermarket with same offset clears most disc brake setups.

Not Seville, Eldorado. And avoid them at all cost. NOT a good rear disc brake solution.

We have a front and a rear setup that will clear 14" drum rims.

Andre, I didn’t think about that. Are you saying there are 14” rims that came on other non-Pontiac vehicles in the ‘60’s that will accommodate a spinner hubcap ? Can you be a little more specific ? Thanks ! Eric

I have 2 GTOS with 14:" wheels and disc brakes- My 1964 has dual piston caliper 1967 disc brakes. These require more clearance than the 1969 and newer disc brakes. This car has GM 14x7 wheels that I was able to purchase from the dealer back in the 90's My 1966 GTO has an aftermarket disc brake setup- single piston caliper. On this car I run the 14x7 aftermarket steel wheel that is sold by a variety of places- Summit, Parts Place etc. I had to remove the slightest bit off the caliper bracket for clearance.

Quote:
Factory 15" fullsize hubcaps - on 16" 8-Lug rims They used a special 16" trim ring , and the 15" hubcaps snap onto the trim ring. www.hubcaps.org in California would be another good place to inquire about these type of adapter trim rings. |
