The #1 wire is on the head stud in these photos.

Yeah Mike, that's what we've been discussing for a while...the question is, why?

Just my thought, the number one plug wire off the spark plug may have been a sign or reminder that the motor had not been timed. Also made it easier to remove that plug to determine TDC.

I already told you, it's to facilitate the install of the temperature sender! ( I think. )

Really, that got to be it. If the wire was installed on the plug, it would have to be moved out of the way to install the sender, thereby adding one more step to the process. We'd need to find pictures of earlier engines (that had the temp sender on the intake) at a similar point on the line to see where the plug wire is.

Or the guy holding the distributer...... Looking at the picts, it would appear there are no distributers installed yet? Odd that the wires would go on first, but I suppose they are all pre-length made & cylinder specific.

Correct. And a separate part number for each one.

You mean that guy has to know the part number for the #5 wire as opposed to the #7 wire, etc.?
Even with them being cut to length and having separate part numbers, seems like a LOT of room for error there.

Absolutely. That's why they have the build sheet: there's no way for a human to remember all of the spark plug part numbers (or steering wheel part numbers or engine part numbers). The build sheet reflects the part that goes on that particular vehicle such that NO THINKING is required from the assembly line operator. You can't expect the person to have to make a decision and understand all of the ramifications (build, legal, regulatory) in a 30 or 45 second period of time - that's all comprehended (hopefully) and laid out years in advance. He or she reads what's on the build sheet and immediately grabs the indicated part for installation.

The complexity is mind boggling. Let's say you want to make a change to that part - like changing the boot shape. If that part is used across multiple products (different engines, different brands) then all of those other users have to be in agreement with the change. A change to the part drives a change to the part number (and broadcast code, if there is one). Additionally, if that part is a detail of an up assembly then all of the assembly part numbers have to change, too.

The smallest technical change is almost too much to manage administratively. Just the act of pulling a new part number is roughly $20,000 (just to pull the number, not to make the part) because of all of people who have to be involved and their time. The release engineer will usually have a hand written (or excel spreadsheet) of all his part numbers in an attempt to keep it all straight.

1974 Pantera, this was the car that Elvis Presley owned. One day, irritated that the car wouldn't start, the King got out and put a few bullets in 'er.

I always thought Panteras were cool cars. It's hard to believe that these exotic looking machines were parked in Lincoln-Mercury showrooms alongside Mercury Capris.

There we have, IMO two of the most beautiful cars ever built. I might be in the minority but I think the Pantera was a beautiful car. Just the right mix of the curves of the past and the angles of the future.

And the GT40, hands down the most beautiful race car ever built.

Yeah, like that would ever happen! At least no one would ever break a window to steal the car.
