Does anybody use ND (non-detergent) oil anymore for the first fire of a brand new motor? This stuff sure is getting hard to find.

Motorcycle shops are another source. Most motorcycles utilizing a wet clutch (ie 99.99%) still require ND oil to be used in the tranny.

Quit using it in the early seventies as it won't take the heat and doesn't have the properties to contain break-in contamination.

A thing of the past.
Better honing procedures and materials now-a-days.

Just go get you a cheap brand of non recycled (new) HD 30 and set the rpm's to 2000+ for a 1/2 hr and then drain the oil and replace the filer with what your gonna use. The K.I.S.S. method.

I even break-in my race engine with Synethic oil and go race with the same oil.

Build it fast, build it right, build a Pontiac.

Dude...perhaps the reason for the Non-Detergent type oil is it doesn't have the additives that tend to "wash" away the cam assembly lube that us flat tappet guys depend on for minimal lobe wear during break-in. I used it per cam maufact. recommendation. Plus using just the outer valve springs during run-in makes it easier on the cam.
Here lately the increase amount of posts regarding lobe failures; just one more reason not to second guess it.
After the initial run-in...YES, change oil /filter to the highest API rated oil.
Granted if your using a roller tappet cam, then your recommendation is a logical approach.

My builder recommended and we used Mobil 1 5W30 for break in and the dyno runs - so far so good!
