The new brace looks very nice. That said I Have installed 2 SD braces and bought the KRE brace but never installed it. I did not think it was worth drilling and tapping 5/16" holes right on top of the cam bearings.
The SD brace has far more ability to get a solid even pull down than 5/16 bolts here and there. And its not like there is any extra meat in a Pontiac lifter valley. That steel plate under the lifter bores spreads out the load much more evenly and can clamp down hard enough to distort your lifter bores. They can be a pain to fit. I did a lot of grinding on my last 100% SD brace. The instructions say 40lbs is max tq on the 3/8 bolts but I stopped at 35 lbs. I figured why risk hearing a "crack" getting them to 40lbs.
One thing on the SD brace, if you are going to use a Tomahawk valley pan or a 1970 PMD (Tomahawk is a copy of it) you will need to grind the heads of the 9/16 bolt heads down to half of their thickness as the bottom of the valley pan will contact them.
AND, do not even do any of the fit/grinding in the same room as your shortblock. I had my block on the engine stand with crank installed and it had a big garbage bag over it, open on one side but covering the whole thing. Small bench grinder was about 15 feet away and the opening was opposite side from grinder facing away. But just from that little bit of grinding on the bolt heads grit got over there, under the bag and on my block that was oiled. You could feel it with your finger rubbing the block.
So........ the whole thing came off, back apart, plugs pulled and re pressure washed in the back yard and re assmebled. It was a pain but worth it for peace of mind. I am sure i could have gotten away with just wiping it all down but might as well do it right.
