Default JW Bellhousing

Hi: Have any of you installed a JW Bell-housing on a TH400 and it pushed the tranny back 1/8" to 3/16".

I installed one with an IA2 block and JW bell housing and the cross member would not line up properly.

Thanks

is your mid plate the culprit? i have alot of adaptability in my gto, as far as front plates and mid plates, up to about .250 front to back. car initially was set up for standard 400 cased trans, did not notice any difference with the JW. you measured an overall length change between a stock cased and a jw equipped one?

No I don't have a mid plate on it. and No I haven't measured the difference between the stock case and the one with the JW bell housing. Duh on my part.. I just assumed it would be the same. I'll check that tonight. I was wondering if it will cause any issues? Aside from just lining up with the cross member bolt holes.

Thanks Charles

should be same +-any tolerance differences. no washers in-between the JW and the front pump right? just the orings?

Yes just the o-rings. I didn't get a change to measure the tranny. Cut the bell housing off the other TH400 I have. Was looking online and it says 24-5/16"

Thanks for the help
Charles

If you find length differences. the pull out on the converter would be vastly different.

Hi Rod: I ended up installing .060 washers between the convertor and flexplate. I remember with the stock bell housing that the washers weren't needed, so that tells me it moved back about 1/8", maybe a bit more. Can't remember the measurement I had.
Spacing for convertor is 1/8" to 3/16" right? With 1/8" being minimum distance.
I have to get the car backup on the hoist to check this stuff out. No brakes on it right now, as were waiting on a Hydra boost unit.

Thanks
Charles

So for you guys running the JW bellhousing what do you use for the remaining trans shield?

i run a blanket on my 64 as there is just too little clearance for an aluminum style, and on my tube car, i have the tci aluminum style, because it fits\ and is light.

I can not imagine they built the housing that way. I
would have to seperate the bell tighten pump without bell (seat pump into trans)

. reinstall bell and see if feeler gauges would go in. Then look for what is not clearenced well.

I checked the bell-housing to tranny pump with feeler gauge as you mentioned. All was good.
I think I may have had the engine sitting rear-ward a bit too much when I tightened the engine mount bolts, which cost me when tranny was installed. I will be checking.

Thanks for the advise.

So why run the bell and a shield vs the full shield like the CSR? Other than the cussing to get those top bolts!

Well first off, the JW bell housing reduces the chances of cracking the bell housing. And the top bolts are not hard to do with a long extension, and before installing the cross member.
I think it would be easier to just install partial shield over tranny and the J W.
Just my thoughts

Thanks Charles. Those upper bolts are a pain on a full shield for sure. Most of the partials I've seen look bulky over the trans and not as tight as the "full".
