Default Hood latch issues....

Opening the hood on my recently purchased 61 is a bit of a struggle.....

It pops up slightly when you pull the latch lever....but the hook does not pull back... to allow the hood to open...

I basically have to jam a big screw driver in there and push the hook over to clear the opening in hood...

Judging from the scratches/paint scrapes in there....this has been going on for a while...

I guess it's not a BAD thing....as it will keep the honest people OUT of my engine compartment...

Is this problematic on this year latch....or has somebody monkeyed with it?

It is a safety feature. You'll understand why when you are in the emergency room getting stiches in the back of your head.

You bend over to look in the engine compartment, then straighten up and smack the front center part of the hood that sticks down with the back of your head. Happened to more than one '61 Pontiac owner.

I have a 75 Grand am....and a 71 Imperial......generally smack the TOP of my head on the latch....going in......

So you are saying that somebody has monkeyed with it to keep it closer to the hood..?

I'm serious about knocking your head, but not serious that someone would disable opening the hood to prevent knocking one's head.

Maybe it just needs some cleaning and re-lubrication, and a little tweaking. Having said that on my car I pop the latch, then reach in the gap with my finger and push the lever over to complete the process. My memory is fuzzy but I think I've been doing that on all the 61's I've owned, going back to the one my dad had when I was a kid.

This isn't just a "finger push" deal....I've been under the hood of numerous 61's...over the years....and something isn't right here...

I'm not home right now or I would go to the garage and give it a try. But from a weak memory I think I always have to pull the lever and then keep it pulled while my left hand raises the hood. All done with the same lever. Then after the hood is up I get real careful about the back of my head.
