69 Mustang convertible. 302 auto trans,,been sitting in a garage for years up the road from me. Seems decent,,going to go back and jack it up and look underneath. At a quick look it didn't seem all rusty but she said many years ago she had some floor work done. The top is a little dirty but looks good, she had it replaced years back. She gave me her bottom dollar but I just want to flip it. So obviously I don't want to overpay. She said it hasn't run j about 3 years or so but runs and drives. Between mice and mildew on interior it needs a massive cleaning.

It looks complete which is good. I would clean the tank, soak cylinders if it doesn’t tun over easily. I would bet you can clean the paint up, dye the carpet and have a nice car to sell.

I would expect to pay $10-12k for a car like this as long as there is not much rust.

You are correct that 4-5k gets you a parts car today

I've brought several early Mustangs back from the dead after sitting "a few years", and they all had the same issues. We start with a new gas tank, sender, hoses, fuel pump and carb overhaul. Many times the radiator and/or heater core are rotten. The usual tune-up items of course, along with a new master cylinder and wheel cylinders. Shoes and other attire, optional.
And then there are the rotten cowls that allow water to drip onto your feet. More often than not, just about everything I mentioned needs attention on the early Mustangs.

The upside is that parts are cheap and plentiful for those cars.

Check the torque boxes right behind the front wheels closely. They love to rot from the inside out, which spreads to the frame rails and floor pans. Same deal with the rear rails where they meet the tail panel.

Fastbacks are where the money is. Coupes and verts dont bring great money, but as always, money is made during the initial purchase. If you get it for the right number, you'll do good. I don't know the vert market well enough to give an educated guess.

I told her I still still need to jack it up to look underneath and offered 5k yesterday just to see if we were in the ballpark. She countered 10k and I said too much. We settled at 7500 and she won't go any lower. If I do buy it I was debating just cleaning it up and getting it running and sell or maybe bodywork and painting it black and putting on some ford magnum rims. I'd like to make a decent profit on the sale. If I just cleaned it and got it running and it was only worth 8k after that I wouldn't waste my time for only 500 .00 profit. If I could of got it for 5k I would of definitely felt better about assuring I could make a decent profit for my time it will take making it look presentable and drivable. I will definitely check out the torque boxes.

Did you say the floor was repaired?
If she had the floor repaired, i'd be especially curious about those torque boxes/ frame rails, front and rear. not a cheap or easy repair.

Also what 4004speed said about the cowls. not an easy repair. pour some water down both sides of the cowl, then look inside at the floors.

I've owned many '68'/'69 cougars, and a few mavericks. same problems.
I cant remember the last time i'd seen a '69 convertible going down the road.

I saw a red 69 or 70 Mustang convertible drive by my house last night. It was being driven by a guy in my neighborhood who sells collector cars. A couple of months ago, he had a blue 1972 Lemans convertible with the GTO front end in his garage.

If the car is truly solid underneath, and not ready to fold in half when you put it on a rack, it has some value. People really like those cars and they sell fast. I think you could get mid teens for it running, cleaned-up, no sign of mice and able to be driven. People seem to think a car bought in the condition I describe are "almost ready" for the local car show, yet they are able to afford it. It's unibody, so if the only thing holding it together are the termites, all bets are off. Good luck.

Thats a base mustang with a base v8 motor. Like was said fastbacks are the ticket. Conv. is a good second. Hagerty says a no.3 car is worth $21k, did not show a price for a #4 which this car is at best. Accordingly I would think a good sale price would be in the $10k range. I think she is pretty close with what she wants. Now of course there is no room if you are flipping. Kinda like she wants retail and you want to pay wholesale. Personally I would not pay more than $7k if I were planning on turning it. I would tell her just that. That she can hold out for who knows how long waiting for $10k or take $7 right now.

By comparison there were just a pair of mustang hardtops on BAT. Kinda apples to oranges but the ones on BAT were 72 hardtops in impeccible original condition, very low milage. They were bought new by firestone and used on the test track to test tires. There were 2, both with sequentially numbered s/n's. Last I saw the high bid on one of them was around $20k.

Unless its a really early car, Boss, Mach 1, or Shelby, they dont get stupid money.

I just re-read my post and it wasn't clear, probably. My estimate of mid-teens was what I felt you could FLIP it for after you do a boatload of work and invest a ton of time in it. For you to buy it and make any money on the flip, you need a solid car for 7K or so. Agree with TAKerry.

7500 is her bottom dollar,,not leaving much meat on the bone for profit from what it sounds like. I'll have another 500.00 in it after a battery and what not. If I could sell it for 10k just cleaning it and getting it running the 2k profit wouldn't be bad but I'm just not sure someone would pay 10k. I'm not really a Mustang guy ,,,don't know if I'd pay 10k for it if I was looking for a 69 vert. At least the top is In good condition.

Buy it. Get it running and driving so it can be daily driven. Clean the sh!t out of it. Fix this and that. Throw a set of Magnum 500's on it. I'd advertise it for $19,500.

$7500 IMO is an excellent deal for this car if it isn't rusted out underneath. Cleaned up it's 20+K all day long. It's a good year, and a ragtop.

The front side of the LH front shock tower looks a little strange... like it's got bondo on it or something. Take a close look at that if you're going back to jack it up. Could just be a heavier than normal dose of bodyshop sealer that got put on at the plant... but looks odd.
