Mastering the Tremec is much easier for those new to manual transmissions. All of us life long Muncie guys have the wrong pattern etched into our brains. Luckily I have only missed 3rd a bunch and not broken anything. When I'm racing I find myself chanting "push straight", "push straight"... Maybe in a few more years I'll break myself of that habit.

TKO With PRO 5.0 shifter will help. the PRO5.0 has a nice spring system to make sure it goes into 3rd when you slam straight up from 2nd. Best 300 bucks you will spend.

yes, the removal is exactly that simple.

Yes the tko kind of goes into third all by itself. Straight up. I too was trying to reach up for third like a 4 speed and learned to just let it go the third by pushing straight up. Took a while. Great trans.

ok got it. i will check out the pro 5.0. and happy to hear this is a common challenge and i am not the weirdo. Bill i had to take the drive shaft out to move the car off the street as it was stuck in gear and would not roll, so one task already down. with the patient open, I am going to beef the tranny up a bit with some of the recommendations above..

Except that's not the solution, that's the problem. The spring loading into 3rd is what screws up Muncie guys. Your statement "slam straight up from 2nd" is what we have to relearn. Competition plus shifters were spring loaded to the 1st/2nd position while Tremec style shifters are spring loaded 3rd/4th. Not a problem unless you've been shifting a Muncie shifter for 55 years. Take the combination of spring loading and driver pressure applied to the handle and you push out of the slot and half way between 3rd and 5th.

The Pro 5.0 shifter is pretty much the same as what he has.

update. I got the tranny out. neighbor had a motorcycle jeck that did the trick. The moment of truth was a bit of a let down. I opened the case expecting to see something broken. Nothing to the visible eye. i put the shifter back on and tested all the gears and seemed to work fine. have a look.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWXjQ_QcJxE

I dont know if something was jammed and it got un-jammed somehow? Or is my test in the video not really validation that if I put this back in the car it will work normal?

After researching this issue pretty thoroughly online now, even if it is fine, i may go ahead and do synchro upgrade and those other things as well, by sending to american powertrain where i bought it. Liberty gears sells a modified shift finger that supposedly helps the 2-3 issue that I might send along as well.

appreciate any thoughts/POV...

Take it apart.
You will find a broken shaft that is not visible.
This exact thing happened to a friend, he had to drive home in 5th gear.
I happened to have a broken TKO that I was able to donate the part from.
I can't remember exactly which shaft it is,sorry.

Watching your video reminded me of something.

Worked on a few rail shift 5 speeds (years ago) that had sheared off roll-pins on the rear shift lugs, that you see in the video. Lug was stuck by the sheared pin and it made the shift tube the wrong length going forward to the shift fork. Which made the transmiision hang in two gears because the tube was the wrong length to disengage a gear.

Took a minute to figure that one out because the lug was stuck/wedged on the tube.

Clay

occam's razor. spoke with AP - he gave me the simplest test around. Go through the gears and watch to see if the output shaft changes. Duh. It's definitely not changing. So something is broken. Will be boxing up and sending out....

Exactly. I just put up for sale in sale section. It’s a helluva a deal for someone that can replace the rail.

Already ordered the tkx today. It’s a plug and play drop in. Shifter and driveshaft measurements all the same. It’s my birthday shortly so I splurged.

Update here. Got tkx in. Direct replacement no issue. Except I left my transmission mount on the old tranny I shipped out. Had to figure out how tall it was. So that delayed me. But solved. Swapped in a white lightning shifter while th patient was open. Have to break in for awhile, but I can already tell a difference. Pretty darn smooth/effortless. And I know how to shift from 2-3.
