Default Starter grinds when hot

The starter on my car works great on the first start but after the engine warms up it either grinds like hell or wont even start it grinds so bad I give up. It just started doing it so I went and had a new pinion put on because it had been chewed up so bad and they said it tested fine and that it was just the pinion chewed up. I put it on and it started up great cold. Once it warmed up it started doing it again. I think it tested good because of course they only tested it cold

I had a Hays flywheel. Ring gear was somehow too large?
I couldnt shim it enough! It ate my mini starter.
Google search revealed others had the same problem w/ the Hays.
I bought another flywheel at autozone.
Noticeably smaller than the Hays.
No problems at all.
Learned my lesson about Hot rod parts.

Could be heat soak from the headers and the solenoid isn't pushing the pinion full travel.

What are you guys running for starters? This is a summit mini? I am looking at Robbmc but $$$$ and I’m hemorrhaging money now.

Did you check pinion to flywheel engagement by pulling the starter pinion onto the flywheel and measuring the clearance? Sounds like engagement is too deep, check the marks on the pinion gear to gauge how deep the contact is.

I had a summit mini starter that would grind until I removed the shim I was using. I’ve found that no shims work the best on stick shift cars.

I’m using an IMI mini with zero gauge battery cables and Ford solenoid- no starting issues.

Check the teeth on your flywheel. Go completley around.

Ford solenoid is the best solution.

I put a Powermaster mini-starter on mine and couldn't clock it to any useful position. My battery connection post is about 1/4" from a header tube. My stock GM starter had more clearance to the headers and with the Ford solenoid, I never had any starting problems but just didn't like the way the solenoid looked hanging on the fender well. I convinced myself the Powermaster Mini was the solution but it heat soaked too. I went back to the Ford solenoid.

Well I will find out tomorrow if I’m changing flywheels or not

FYI, Robbmc starters cannot use a Ford solenoid. Read the instructions first.
I use one with my Tilton Super Starter, works great every time.

I’m afraid I’m gonna end up needing a flywheel. I seriously have no idea why but it just started grinding like hell and no matter how I shimmed it it just got worse and worse. Second starter just ravished the flywheel. I am hoping a regular full-size ac Delco starter can save it but I seriously doubt it. If I have to put a flywheel on it she’s dead in the garage cause summer vacation and daughters band stuff is on the horizon and I’m broke.

I run a Robbmc on my 37. Last time I had an issue I sent the starter back thinking the solenoid was bad. Robbmc replaced the solenoid with a lightly used one and sent the old one back as well telling me that it was fine. At their suggestion I put a ford solenoid on the firewall and it's been working great.

And IIRC, that transmission was shoehorned into place. When it rains, it pours.

It was put in the first time with the front end off and there was no way to get it out without pulling the motor. It was the upper right bolt that was gonna prevent it. A BFH cured it while it was out but it’s still gonna suck

David,

What brand of flywheel are you using, that you can't change the ring gear on?

With Flywheels, usually if they aren't too worn or badly chewed, I just flip the ring gear around and keep using it.

If it's so bad that you can't do that, a ring gear replacement isn't all that expensive to do.

On Pontiacs, if I have to have a mini, it's a RobbMC with the pinion support. I don't care for the other aftermarket stuff out there. But 9 times out of 10 the stock starters work just fine for me.
