Oil level in the engine.
If pontiac thought it was a good idea to put a total of 7 Qt in the 1966-67 V8s, using a 6 Qtr dip stick, why didn't they continue with it for 1968 and later engines?
And, yesterday when I filled the engine in my 66 GTO with a total of 6 Qts, my 6 Qts dipstick indicated "Full", which obviously indicates that the block pipe is too short. I then fabricated an extender for the block tube so that a 5 Qtr dipstick indicated "Full". 5 Qts in the tray plus 1 Qtr for the (long) filter. Should i add another Quart of oil to have "Full" on the original 6 Qtr dipstick (total of 7 Qts)? Thoughts on this? |

My 67 Catalina Sport Coupe with a 325 HP 400 needed 6 quarts to fill the pan. My 79 Trans Am needs 5 quarts. The pans are virtually identical.

The sticks are the same with the full mark a little higher on the stick.

Drain oil and filter completely. Install new filter and exactly 6 quarts. Start for a few minutes. Let sit. Check where it is on stick and scratch a new line for full. If I’ve run hundreds of 9 second passes on 6 quarts, your street cruiser will be fine with 6 too.

The engines before and after 1966-67 use 5 Qt rods but both the 5 Qt and the 1966-67 6 Qt rod say "Do not overfill".
Why was it necessary to overfill the engines with 1 Qt in 1966-67? |

Pictures, I have used these for years that’s the difference at some point they determined 5+ filter was enough. I still run 6 to the full mark.

The operators manual specified 6 quarts + 1 for the filter. The dip stick always read at the full mark after running it checking for leaks.

Not an expert but I have had 4 Pontiacs and have always just put in 6 quarts and looked at dipstick. Never had an issue with oil volume, just other things LOL

It could be reason is that later Pontiac 400's got rid of the windage tray.
