You could add a stop at the end of the 3rd gear to keep it from going into neutral.
(at least not as easy)

A dowel could work; I'm not even sure if the stops are terribley important. One is actually a guide and not a stop.

If Chris will send me his column I can get a better idea of how we could CNC one with dowels for example and make a more sophisticated piece with a third stop.
