Default What type of gear oil to use

I've replaced the posi unit in my 67 after blowing it out last week at the dragstrip. I've ordered an Eaton Posi 3 series differential. Question is what type of gear oil are you guys using? Eaton says to use a mineral based oil, not a synthetic, with a friction additive, such as the one GM makes.

What about Vavoline DuraBlend 80w-90? I understand that already contains friction additive.

The Valvoline will work fine but you may have to add the GM friction additive anyway.

If you use the additive use regular gear lube.
My Pontiac 9-3/4" was slipping with additive and gear lube with additive.

Brad at Fab-Craft sells a good additive.

Lucas Oil diff lube. It comes with the positive traction additive already added. I use it in everything. Just pick the vescosity for your application. JD

Nick, we sell a LOT of Valvoline products here at my shop.

ALL Valvoline "DuraBlend" products are semi-synthetic, so I'd stay away from it.

Personally, I use a name brand GL-5 rated 80W90 gear oil, with NO posi additives. If you experience objectionable posi "chatter" on turns, then add a bottle of the posi additive.

Posi additives make the oil slipperier, decreasing the "breakaway torque" between the axles. NOT what I want out of a limited-slip diff!

Another Lucas vote here! I run some sort of Lucas product in everything I own. By the way, the high powered, diesel tractor pull guys all swear by their stuff...

Currently running Mobil 1 plus additive......no problems, but perhaps I'm either in overkill, or the synthetic and additive may not be the best mix. I'm curious to see what others have to say here.

As usual there are varying opinions on this particular subject, not only here but on most of the other boards that I visit. I called Eaton today and they stated to NOT USE synthetics with their posi unit. They said use mineral based oil and friction additive. I'll play it safe and go with their recommendation.
