There's folks in this forum a lot more knowledgeable than me to confirm, but the heads, intake manifold, front pulleys, brackets, etc. are not interchangeable between the '63 389 and a later 455. In '65 the heads, intake, etc. changed on the 389 and 421 engines. So little of the '63/'64 and '65 stuff is interchangeable. Then in '67 the heads, intake, etc. changed again with the 400 and 428 engines.

There are guides out there that talk about what parts are compatible (and probably some in this forum know for sure), but little will be interchangeable between the 455 and previous Pontiac V8s, especially your 389. I've experienced this with rebuilding my 389 in my '64 Grand Prix. Much of the aftermarket you see (reproduction valley pans or ARP manifold bolts, for example of two items) won't fit or work properly on '64 and earlier engines, even if the descriptions in the catalogs say they will. Ask me how I know .

If you buy the 455, buy as complete of an engine as possible, assuming little to none of your 389 will be able to be used. If you try to buy a 455 in pieces at a time, like any car, it will cost you a lot of time and money. Then again, if you're looking for parts like an alternator, front pulley system, etc. to complete the block you purchased, you may want new parts or go aftermarket anyway rather than chase down used parts everywhere. There are plenty of aftermarket parts out there for the 455 to build the engine. For the 389, not so much.

Fred Teufert has some interchange information on his website: http://www.teufert.net/pontiac/inter.htm He doesn't list pulleys, but you can determine that easily enough by simply trying the parts on for size to see if they line up (or fit, I know in some cases an early pulley won't even go on a later water pump.) Also note pulley alignment will depend on the mounting brackets for the alternator and other accessories.

I have found if you use the complete front of a engine like a 63 timing cover, balancer, brackets etc it will work on a 69 engine.Micing and matching gets you in trouble.Tom

Update. Still trying to find a running 455. Seems like I can find pieces but not one in its entirety.

Grunted, you may have to buy a rusted-out but engine-running '71-'76 Grandville or Bonneville to source a complete engine (& transmission).

You can search the search engines for cars with this site: http://www.autotempest.com/

...this site has found me several cars (whether I needed them or not!).

Grunted, I responded quite awhile back that I had a complete 455 for you but you chose not to except. You wanted to see what else was out there. Now I'll let you keep looking. My 455 is not for sale.

I found your post above to be extremely rude.

"I have a 1973 455 completely rebuilt with 2000 miles on it. The car it was in rusted away so it got pulled out. It was pulled out with the wiring harness still attached, and the belts and hoses. If you are slightly interested I can send pictures and rebuild info. I would like $4000."

and nobody would purchase an emissions 1973 455 motor where somehow the car rusted out but the motor was just re-built 2000 miles ago. especially for 4000 dollars. finding motors for astronomical prices is completely plausible but, I dont think going into someones build thread and saying stuff like that is right. especially when finding redone built 1970-71 motors for 3k is more than possible.

But thanks for your help with letting me know that even where there are tons of people that are awesome there will always be grouches around.

and with an overnight delivery comes a Model year 1970 455. not in the elements and beautifully preserved. heads look good and the motor turned with ease amazingly. for less than half the cost of others on this site! speaking of which, If anyone needs a 455 in the Tristate, I believe I can get 6 more, a few 421s and a few other COMPLETE motors. I have at my disposal a surplus of parts which is amazing. Crazy what a night does! If anyone needs anything please let me know. I will find out and help any of you guys! pictures and the tear down to come hopefully sometime this week

-64 block cast
--9799140
-15 heads
-10.0 : 1 compression
-Small valve 1.96/1.66

Im not sure of what the stock Specs are on this camshaft I have now is but, everythings leading me to the 068 cam upgrade.

I am looking for a daily but pushing more towards some street fun.
--I believe the 068 will allow for stock heads? perhaps changing springs for a little bit more opening. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

068 is always a good choice. If you can get your hands on either a 421 or a 455 at a decent price, PM me...I'll drive to NY to pick it up!
