Default '64 389 Head Gasket Installed Upside Down?

Does the head gasket have a right side up that must be against the block?

After installing stock head with new gasket, I have what appears to be exhaust leak showing in between the intake manifold runners above the valley pan. So I assume it's head gasket.

More of a chance that it is a mismatch between heads, intake manifold, and intake gaskets. Head gaskets like FelPro do not have a right side up. Butler gaskets specify that the composition side goes towards the head, but flipping them wouldn't cause any type of exhaust leak.

Wallace has a page on compatibility: http://www.wallaceracing.com/head1.htm
