Default SD455 and 303 Cam Manufacturers?

I believe the SD455 and 303 both used the larger-gear distributor and have a smaller gear on the cam than a standard Pontiac.

Who is able to manufacture a .575" or larger roller-solid cam today with the smaller gear?

Besides the factory SD cams, does anyone have other manufacturers and part numbers I could cross-reference in the catalog hunt?

Butler pointed me to Comp. The Comp guy could not delineate the gear size on the cam from his books. Fair enough.

Working on a 303 and this will be a big nut to crack.

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Why not use a cam with the standard gear size and just change the gear on the distributor to the smaller one? If your block has the larger hole, just get the sleeve for the distributor and pin it in place. Going to be way cheaper. You will also have a greater cam selection this way. JMTC

In all the V engines I have built I have never used a cam with the small gear on it.I dont think you will get anyone to build one. There are NOS V cams around if you want to use old tech.I have never found a issue using the standard gear combo.Tom

Jeff,

You know that's too smart for me...

Spacer is already built. Solid idea and just change the gear every season.

Solid idea! Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

So I actually I have the coolest dizzy...

Several years ago I had a few conversations with Dave Bean. He was the Titus crew chief.

He mentioned that Herb Adams showed up with a suitcase of "expensive Corvette distributors." So I had a Corvette tach-drive bearing distributor shortened and a spacer made.

I have germanium diode TI ignition boxes as I believe they ran two of them on the transmission tunnel--when one failed, the driver moved the plug,

I believe the David Tom book has a picture of this.

No MSD or HEI for me...

Tom, can you share a few pictures? Small-drive cam blank is proving difficult. Jeff's solution of simply swapping the gear (and replacing annually) is realistic.

I am also on the hunt for the external oil pressure regulator thingy that bolts to the oil filter housing.

Otherwise I'll use an Aviaid remote regulator first and make something more permanent.

I appreciate you following this and helping wiht the project.

I just run a custom V cam from Comp with a traditional gear,I run a BOP composite on the dizzy and just check them when I think about it.NEVER have had to change a dizzy gear since using the BOP.I use a std iron gear when braking in the cam and switch to the BOP after.I just use a 60 lb pump in all my engines also.Tom

These dizzys along with a std size shaft were made for the short deck Xram intakes. The intakes both Vs and IVs were made.I have owned a couple of the IVs and 3 of the Vs.I was told they only made a dz or so intakes and dizzys of each style.Rarest of the rare when it comes to V stuff.Throttlestop has one of the IV dizzys in the 301-383 stroker V engine I sold them.A board member has a V with the 366 V short deck with Xram I sold him.Cant remember where the other intake and dizzy went. The intakes are pretty much unusable without the tall dizzys.Tom

Tom,

Thanks. It is cool to see Pontiac royalty.

I'll ask Jim to send a picture of my chimera. it is a simple spacer that slides over the shortened Corvette distributor. Mike Zamora of Renu-a-Vette in Albuquerque (sp? I am sure I killed it) did the distributor and is great with original wiring fittings and factory vibe.

As you know, mine is a standard deck.

Pontiac odd-balls are pretty darn fun.
