Default Saving an oil pump

Paul Carter blueprinted my oil pump and between the cost of the pump and his labor it was not cheap. Canton requires a special pickup. I have ordered a new one of those because its obviously never gonna come clean enough. If I take the pump apart can I clean it sufficiently to reuse it or am I just on the hook for a new pump? If I need a new pump do you guys like high volume or high pressure?

All of the Pontiac 400/428/455 pumps are high volume.
The 455 SD Pump used about $6.00 worth of parts and raised the pressure to 80 psi before bypassing oil.
Same Volume Flow vs the 60 psi pump at the same engine rpm. You don't need a 80 psi pump.

As far as a Screen goes you can buy a new screen from Melling Oil Pumps but without a picture I have no way of judging if Paul made mods to the normal pump screen.

I have to use the Canton pump screen that bolts on as well as pushes in. It would be impossible to clean so I ordered another one of those

The pickup screen should have protected your oil pump for the short time there was metal in the oil.

Take apart the oil pump. Clean and inspect the gears and body cavity for scoring. You should be able to back flush the pickup and get it clean. A high pressure washer and detergent should work.

Probably a zero dollar fix.

Canton pickups are easy to clean. The screen is coarse. Now the factory/Melling pickups have very fine screens and I would not reuse one from a blown engine.
I made a jig for testing your oil pump. Just need a bucket with some oil and a 1/2" drill. You pay shipping both ways, give me a time frame and you can use it and check your pump out, its pressure and all that.
Let me know, I am done with it for at least a few months.

Oil pumps are stupid simple. Take it completely apart including the bypass spring and ball and go after it.

I take ALL of them apart here for a thorough cleaning before placing them in service. I also drill and tap for an 8-32 machine screw to secure the pick-up to the pump, or with some pick-ups I'll get fancy and weld a piece of flat stock on them to go under one of the cover bolts.

Oil pumps aren't fussy, and usually survive pretty well if something catastrophic happens to the engine.........
