Default Sail panel instalation

I'm almost ready to install my new Legendary sail panels. My 67 HT has a backer board on each side which is held in place with the tac strip for the headliner. The new sail panels came with velcro to attach the sail panels to the backer. I'd like to replace these backer boards but don't see them available from our host. Any sugestions? Mine are just okay, but they're warped.

Default sail panels

Thanks Jeff. I saw those but thought they were the blank boards that you could recover with your headliner material. I didn't think they were the backer boards.

Correct, there is no separate "Backer" headliner material is glued to the sail board and held on with panel clips, same as door panels.
The only thing behind the (sail panels/ear muffs) from the factory is insulation.
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your request.

Default Sail Panel Instalation.

Thanks Jeff. It all makes sense now. Duh! Are you aware of any trim or seal that goes along the bottom of the sail panel where it lays on the package tray?

I'm reviving this thread rather than creating a new one on this topic. I'm taking a look at what I'll need to install the sail headliner and sail panels, and in the Ames catalogue, they list these clips as the "headliner tacking rail retainer":

I don't think I have these in my stash from when I disassembled the car, and I don't understand where or how they are used for the tacking rail. Can someone please enlighten me? It's my understanding that the tacking rail is screwed the the roof structure of the car with two phillips screws, then the headliner is stretched downward and tacked/stapled to the tacking strip, and then two clips like shown in Jeff's post above are used to secure the sail panel to the roof structure below the tacking rail. So then, where do these "headliner tacking rail retainer clips" sold by Ames get used?

My car is a 64 - but clips like that held the tack rails along the base of the sail panel area to the roof structure. I might have a picture in my records...

Thanks Wild Cat. I'd appreciate a photo if you can dig one up.

Those look slightly similar to the OE retaining clips found/used on the tack strips along the top of the windshield and rear window.

Looks to me like you push them in then flatten them with a hammer, whereas I think the OE clips were made flat.

These might have also been used on the lower tack strip on the early/1st design sail panels, but that I'm not sure of.

Only one tack strip was in my car when I got it and it was held in by a clip. It definitely looks more like the picture Mr. Hamlin posted than the catalog. Unfortunately - I only have this one really bad photo....

Back in the day, we would search out obscure hardware like these in the salvage yards but over time with any project,
if things like this are not available we just find a functional replacement. In this case, short wide head self-tap screws work just fine.
No one will ever know
