72 Lemans kick down switch with turbo 400
This year I finished complete resto of my 72 convertible. First and second drive the kick down switch worked. Since then it will not downshift automatically when floored. Not sure if the switch went bad or if there is something out in the rebuilt auto trans (like the sensor). What's the best way to troubleshoot this?

I think three different components might be involved ... the kickdown at the pedal for sure, then the kickdown solenoid in the trans .... and maybe the vacuum modulator also.
First thing I'd check is the wiring from the pedal switch to the terminal on the trans for the solenoid. You could probably energize the solenoid terminal with 12v and listen for it clicking to see if that is working. Also ... the kickdown switch at the pedal is adjustable, if it wasn't tight, might have moved when you put your foot into it, or if it was sticky might have tweaked the mount. |

My order of operations would be:
1. Check the switch is adjusted right at the pedal. 2. Check wiring from switch to pedal 3. Check operation of the solenoid if you can 4. Start looking at the vacuum modulator (someone that knows more than me would have to chime in on if the modulator can cause a kickdown problem) I know they get sticky with age and can bend their mounting bracket when you stomp on the pedal. |
