Looking for opinions 200 4R behind stock 350 Pontiac
So just wondering that once I get done with my combo I currently run....if I went back to the original 350 that was in the car. Would a stock rebuilt 200 4r survive without issue....
Guy around town rebuilds with converter for decent price ...he's a retired guy and former GM tech...looking for opinions/thoughts here for possible down the road changes.....thanks

The Pontiac 355 ( yeah its Not a 350) has probably 310 Torque in '73.
That is a bit much for a stock rebuild of a 2004R. You want a 10 vane pump and some quality clutches. You want it built for a 1 wire hook up ( lock up solenoid) only so no need for a computer/controller. Add a mild shift kit to above with a stock converter and you should be fine. Can use a STOCK TH400 cross member, and stock Driveshaft from a th350, or 4 speed. will need an adjustable TV cable and bracket for it at carb. Finding a Converter "dust cover" with the DS mounted starter is a chore, but not really needed. Ensure you use a transmission cooler, in addition to, or in place of the tank cooler in radiator. Excellent and easy choice ..

I had a stock one form a Grand National in my 67 firebird for years, if you dont beat it to hard it will be ok, as long as the TV cable is adjusted right.
it ha d a 467 stroker in it

Im saying that because I have a very similar car ( 73 esprit that has a very nice running 350P and th350 with a 4 pinion Nodular diff from a 68 F bird. Its an excellent driver, and I also happent to have a '87 GN 2004r transmission, and thought many times about swapping the 2004r in it. But I have been building a complete drivetrain for the car for years and now its ready to go in the car . Its a 461 with SD performance ported Iron heads, a Jakes performance Th400 and continental 3200 converter with a built 30 spline 8.5 10 bolts with true trac and 3.08s. Im sure i will have fun with the new drivetrain but that little 350P is very nice putting around town. I also thought about putting a 400 with a 4 speed ,, but thats another story lol As for the 2004r I have studied the questions extensively ( I even thought running a built 2004r behind the new 461 before I settled for the th400, because ill run a 200 shot), Any good transmission shop can make a 2004r can be simply rebuilt with decent parts and no fancy or expensise billet parts to cope with a healthy 350p daily driven. You need a good torque converter, lock up switch running vaccum or electrical switch, and pay lots of attention to the TV cable adjustment with the appropriate bracket. The 2004r is a great transmission , I love the gear spread and simplicity of it. Peter |

I'm just looking at this a down the road adventure should I decide to do this...it would make the car way more road friendly and a little easier on the pocket book...

Here's a table showing the torque rating, max GVW, torque convertor diameter, and length, of all stock GM transmissions, the 200-4r is 330 lb/ft according to this table. Probably adequate for a mild 350 P, not my first choice, but I'm not going to bore anyone with that, nor start an argument here.
This chart is good starting point for anyone contemplating an OD 4 speed for their car. |

I had a 200-4R behind a 462 in a Lemans - did just fine including track time. You will want at least 3.42's as carbs lug in OD at 60-70 mph.

This is relatively easy and a great way to be able to enjoy your car. All bolt in. I even have the back drive hooked up, and the shift point on Trans side
is in a different spot than a th350. I run a stage 3 with a mild shift kit behind a stock CR 72 455HO. Easily ruins a driveshaft, but not the transmission. 200 is THE best bolt in OD ratio at .67 My shifter mods came from "Shiftwerks" and I did use a bowtie overdrive cross member, BUT found my TH400cross member is a bolt in fit. with a 3.42 10 bolt posi......Locked up in OD

You want it built for a 1 wire hook up ( lock up solenoid) only so no need for a computer/controller
Bruce u mean for the lock up converter operation with a brake switch or other means…can you elaborate or do you have a post here on the forum to read …. Missed that STOCK converter in your original reply
