Thanks. One other reason for the switch is some of my friends have Chevys with posi and I need to uphold the GTOs honor.

Default 2.93 gears

hi guys...new to the thread....am finally after 10 years building out my 67 hdtp......my biggest concern was the 2.93 gear set...after reading this thread....I think ill keep them and add the posi unit...I was hoping to find either a 3.08 or 3.23 ring and pinion set to fit the mid carrier and add a posi unit [as most of you probably know...good luck w/ that]....any way looking forward to wasting a bunch of time going through the site

Phil, here's what I have for the change to the 3.36 ratio.
Have a professional do the swap.

Richmond Ring and Pinion Bearing Set - RMG - 831D401
Motive Gear Performance 3:36 Ring and Pinion Bearing Set - G882336
Auburn Limited Slip HPS Limited Slip Unit - Sorry but I can't find the part number.
National Bearings Axle Bearings - RW-507-GR, and Seals - 85945 You'll have the axles out so change them.
Valvoline 85W-140 Limited Slip Gear Oil

I just went the other way for the fun of it. I never drive the car long distances any longer.

I removed a 2:73 Olds "O" type 8.5 Posi for 3:42's in the same housing.

I will say that the old 400 in the GTO had no issues with the Spin and Grin factor even with the 2:73's
I'd run them again.

I have fantasies of taking my ride on rte 66 cross country when its finished.....previously when my car was on the road I couldn't go 50 miles w/o a cooling problem....I tried every trick in the book to solve....the final diagnosas was burnt up bearings which required a new block...so ten years, an unscrupulous restorer, and two financial crises later, ive got my car back and intend to have it on the road this summer...good luck to me!!!

Welcome to the forums. I am basically finished with a 7 year restoration but for the posi-traction. Start a thread and post up some pics of your ride.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I would like a little education. Can someone post a photo of a "carrier"? Is that the ring and pinion housing? In other words , if I hada 2.93 rear end and wanted to make it a 3.55 what would I need to change or could I change that rear end to a 3.55? Just trying to learn here.

You would need to change the carrier to a "3" series...the carrier is the chunk that actually holds the ring gear, clutches, bearings, etc.(and bolts in to the rearend housing) Hope that helps.
