SD vs '69 RAIV trade??
Here’s a couple of shots of “The Twins at the Spring Dust-Off today – first time I’ve ever had them both at a show at the same time thanks to my substitute driver nephew. As usual it seems for this show, cloudy with a slight chance of rain but it did manage to stay dry and wasn’t a bad turnout in spite of the low/mid 50’s temperatures and clouds. Also a shot of Bob’s new look (no trim rings).
Surprise of the show for us was a never before seen 1969 RAIV 4-speed T/A! The owner has had it since 1985 and it hadn’t been out for a number of years. With only 36K miles on the clock, a very straight original car. It needs some work (paint, a lot of detailing etc.) but a very cool car. This leads to my next question for you guys……..hypothetically speaking, would you trade a restored ’74 4-speed SD for the unrestored ’69 RAIV T/A??? Question was thrown about with my project car (class winner at last years Tri-power Nat’s and T/A Nat’s) as the subject of the trade. I’d like to hear your thoughts. Again, the ’69 would need a lot of work to be a show winner but it was all there including numbers matching powertrain. The body looked to be very solid, no obvious rust or repairs. The interior was probably original and very nice, just needed a good cleaning and detail.

Gee, what do you really think Brew! As my post said, "hypothetically", or for you Brew (remember the SD Disease), that means supposed, assuming, in theory, tentatively……in other words not based on an observation. We were just talking Brew, nothing happening, just something for discussion so settle down big fella!

Really? I would think you would only be interested in it if it were a convertible?
I'm pretty knowledgable on these 69's (maybe not as much as some of you guys) but, is there something I forgot? Don't get me wrong I love the 69's but an SD? |

Settle Down, I almost called you last night to discuss this car.
I know you Dick and "hypothetically speaking" means its possibly already in your garage! I'll call you to discuss this over the phone and up and coming car shows. I need to mark some dates on the calendar before momma fills them in on me. Later P/S-Whats with the NO Trim Ring look Bob, are we going to the races? I do like the look even though its wrong for that year. Last edited by Brewster; 05-21-2007 at 10:17 AM. |

I think a fair trade would be two to three 74 sd's for the 69ra4 t/a

I heard that a 69 TA RA IV complete original matching 4-speed can get close to 500K? Now, I am no expert on pricing so don't shoot me either. I also heard there is no Pontiac that can get 500K right now in this market. So, that is a conflict already.
If you got the 69 RA IV TA for a 74 SD TA you got the smoking deal!

Wow, 500k for project car! Dick you must have done a really good job on that car of yours.
Can you see where this is going??????????? Would this TA owner rather have a green sd? |

I could be wrong, but based on those pics and description. But, that engine and drivetrain matching "day one block" with low miles on clock documented, body is solid "dayone sheetmetal", interior needs cleaning "original".
69 TA RA IV 4-speeds with their "dayone" stuff still there are what opens up the big wallets! So, very few RA IV have that today. Those pictures show a very solid car that is a lot closer to a survivor than most projects I've seen. But, rwinkles is the one who would know best. Is it a total project or just a nice clean up and a good bit of detailing?

First off, there were no 69 T/A convertibles built with the RAIV engine. There were 4 auto's and 4 sticks and they were all RAIII. Even one of those would be a super no brainer as a trade. This car was all there but needed paint to be a really nice car and a ton of detailing. It had the original WW block but we did not see the carb, distributor, etc. The interior was all useable with the exception of the carpet. The gauges looked like the car was built yesterday. Unbelievable! I'm guessing an investment of at least 30-40k to satisfy the taste of rwinkles. Is it really a great trade? Probably! Is it going to be a ton of work and research to complete it to his satisfaction? No question! I would guess a value of at least 250k when completed. Maybe more!

Bob,
The car that's in the pics and I assume he's discussing here is NOT a convertible. But you're right that no convertibles were 4spd. For what it's worth I do the trade in a heartbeat, if it were me. FF |

I know of one that sold last year for 165 and its a nice original car. Maybe you are right the car might be worth 250 done but I dont think it would bring more than that.

Its only worth what someone is willing to pay!
To be honest if done right and with the time frame of 12-24 months this car market could have doubled, or tripled. Bob's right their where only 8 rag tops produced all caring the RAIII and 50/50 stick/manual. |

Thanks Bob...I didn't realize it was a RamIV and that it was rarer. You learn something everyday.

More pictures please!
1-of-46 is rare alright, and to be un-restored makes it even better. Nice find and hope it becomes a new addition for that garage of yours. |

Wow, great discussion guys! Here are all of the pictures that I took; the one of the interior didn't come out, sorry. Seriously, nothing is happening as far as a trade but it sounds like if the opportunity came up, most wouldn't think twice and I have to say, I agree!

Dick,
I have been thinking about this..When it comes to cars and car sales usually if it is really easy...there is a reason. Why would this guy give up such a rare car? Unless he is just really old and shouldnt be buying any green banana's....why wouldn't he have restored it by now? BJ's Auction had a RA III bring 105K with Herb Adams autograph under the trunk lid year before last..Would a RA IV bring 75% more? Great thread though.. I know where a real parts car is if you need it. No engine or trans..
