Default Cold Case radiator GPG19 65 GTO tri power

My old Harrison radiator was beginning to over heat.

I removed it and saw that it was partially clogged with bits of rust and had scale.

I have heard good things about Cold Case and ordered one described as a direct replacement.

Upon receiving it from Summit, I saw that the tanks were 1/2” narrower than the
Harrison, and did not fit my mounts.

Summit sent another one which was the same as the first.

Any one else experience this or is the narrow tank considered a direct replacement
For the 3” Harrison.

Thank you.

With aluminum, the core is going to be dual 1" which is actually thinner than a 4 row copper brass but has more volume and better cooling. If you are referring to the tanks leaving a slight gap in the rubber insulators, then that's the way they all are. I suppose there could be a gap as much as 1/4" on each side? When you use the top claw bracket, it should be tight enough that the radiator can't move.

The Super Duty versions of the GTO radiator have bigger tanks but are only available with a drivers side inlet on the top.

I ordered the Cold Case rad and fan kit for my 67, I use Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 with their fan control with a 180 deg stat and a Meziere electric pump, and my engine climbed over 220 deg F, the fans are working as hard as they can, but I'm afraid of over heating.Any suggestions?

220 doesnt' sound right. That's too high under most conditions. Normal should be 200 and under for a traditional pontiac motor.

How long did it take to get to 220?
What was the car doing to get to 220? ie sitting or moving. If moving, how fast?
What was the air temperature when you rose to 220?
which radiator part number did you order?
Is this a new motor that you are starting up for the 1st time? If not, what was in the car previous and what temps were you running?
Are you using a relay for the fans? ie how did you wire them?

If you ordered the fans from Cold Case get rid of the shroud. I read on a few threads their design doesn’t allow for enough air flow. Had the same problem on my stock 70 GTO. Went back to a factory fan with the cold case radiator and it works great.

The radand fans are GPG34ASK, it seems to climb to 220 degrees at cruise, 40-50 mph, the engine has maybe 50 miles on it. Perhaps it's running too lean at cruise? The outside temp was 80 degs

Pro Flo 4 triggers the fan relays. The fans are turning on at the desired temp, they just never cycle off

Based on this information, as long as those fans are PULLING air and not pushing, then you don't have a fan issue. At 40mph, you don't even need fans.

If temps are climbing at that speed range, then you most likely have some other motor issue. New motors run very hot if not fully broken in. Water pump is aftermarket. Make sure it's not reverse flow. Possible bad thermostat is stuck partially closed? Engine timing?

Many of us have clearanced the space of plate to pump. If gap is excessive, it could cause the pump not to be as efficient, leading to higher temps also.

The problem is the shroud. If you have dual 14” fans the only air moving across the radiator is the two 14” circles. I even talked the the guys at the cold case tent at Norwalk and they agreed.

We have seen this happen but but it's not probable for this situation. He wasn't on the road for long enough. If this were true for every owner of a dual fan car/truck, there would be a LOT of angry hot running cars out there. The issue of air flow blockage at speed is a very unique and rare one.

We believe that problem has to do with the particular vehicle that has other air flows counter acting the fans air flow. Like air being rammed up from under the car and pushing back at the fans.

I'm not inclined to go that way at this point but if the owner wants to take off the shroud and try it, that's certainly an option.

btw, GTO shroud kits are dual 12" not dual 14". 12" is the biggest you can fit in a 24" wide radiator.
