Default 15 inch rims on a 68

Has anyone with a 68 had trouble with 15’s rubbing on the front ? The shop finishing up my resto said that he’s done a few 68’s with 15’s that catch the fender but he didn’t recall the tire size right off . I’m wanting to run 15x7 and probably a 235/60 .

Yes.
A 215-65 rubs on mine. I went to a smaller tire on a 6" rim that didn't rub at all but l didn't like the look. I'm running a 225-60 now and it will rub slightly on occasion. A lot of people cut a vertical pie shaped slit down low at the rear of the wheel opening pull it back an inch or so and weld it up during the bodywork phase. Not a bad idea.
I know a 245-60 would rub on mine but in fairness l'm running original springs and some pretty old shocks up front. On my list of things to change.

So Greg ,I’m baffled by this ! Is it the width or the diameter that is the issue ? Are 69’s effected?

Are you specifically speaking of Rally II’s? I have 15x7’s on mine with 235/60’s and no issues. I think they’re either JW’s or HW’s but would have to check as I have a set on the car and one set I’m restoring and can’t remember which. The track with also varies 1/2” disc vs. drum fronts I believe, if that has anything to do with the variations in fit/not fit?

I'm not sure if it's the diameter or the width or even the ride height. Also, as Entropy11 just demonstrated, your mileage may vary. Mine usually experience it in a diving or climbing, sharp turn.
If I park on level ground and cut my wheels to the right for instance, the inboard edge of my driver side tire is only about an inch or less from the fender opening at the very bottom.

Yes ralley II’s , they are wheel vintiques , I don’t recall the back spacing but it was nothing custom . I have new Eaton Detroit springs . I have thought tires yet. The car had F70-14s when I took it apart . I figured 235/60/15 wouldn’t be a problem . I put a disc set up on it from scare bird .

Great points that I didn’t think of Greg. Mine is sitting on new springs front and rear. I also don’t have a good history of what might have already been tweaked, filed down, or otherwise “adjusted” years ago. We had another A-body a few years ago that only seemed to rub backing out of the driveway to the left lol. Plenty of variables no doubt.

235/60-15 on 15x7 Rally II wheels is pretty much the limit on what fits in the front of ‘68-‘69 cars.

The ‘70-‘72 cars can handle a 245/60-15 with that wheel, the shape of the wheel openings are not tapered in at the bottom like on the earlier cars.

That's right... it's that forward kick at the bottom rear of the front wheel opening on these cars.

Ahem, 245s x 15x7s Rally IIs all around. Here's how;

You can grind the Stainless and Front Fender's rear kick-in and front kick-in, and looks unmodified when done.

Been doing this since the early 90s for best handling.

Oh 245 front and 275 rear causes over-steer, while 245s all around is quite good handling.

Front alignment can make or break the fit. Sloppy springs can cause tire contact to wheelwell.

235s for the Stock fenders.

My 68 has P225/70 R15's on 7" rally II's. They do rub the fender on a tight corner. I also have wheel spacers up front, so they clear the disc brakes. Don't know where the alignment is on mine.

I believe it is width, not overall diameter. On my 68 LeMans Convertible I bought 17 x 8 Hurst wheels and put 275’s all the way around because that’s what I have on my 70 GTO with no issues.

Completely chewed up the newly redlined 275’s! I put 245’s on the front and have had no issues,

I really think it can be either. I had 215-70s on steelies and they rubbed too. They were fairly skinny.
