Yes, it is a short staff or a stave . Just like a full size staff requiring the time and effort to get proficient to use as a potential weapon. Useful as a walking stick where other forms of potential weapons are outlawed( knifes, swords, kubuton, guns, sai, etc). I believe Jame Caan used one in " The Killer Elite" movie.

When I trained in Martial Arts, anything could be used as a weapon. I watched my instructor take Chop sticks and bury them in 1/4" plywood.

I do remember Bat Masterson ... great show.

From My Gaelic roots, the walking/fighting Shillelaghs have been the subject of a lot of Irish lore. I have a "version".
