If it is the thin vinyl woodgrain type most are peel and stick already. If yours is not -- be careful using the spray adhesive as it could penetrate the thin vinyl and deform it.

Default Woodgrain vinyl removal question

I need to redo the woodgrain vinyl on a 68-72 style console and as I read in other posts, mineral spirits are recommended to remove the old vinyl.

On the shifter bezel, the aluminum backing sheet is no longer stuck to the bezel, so I figured I can soak the whole sheet in a plastic bag filled with solvent overnight.

I also noticed the long edges of the backing sheet are lifted on the longer woodgrain.

Questions:

- What is the backing sheet made of? Aluminum or steel?

- Will mineral spirits also remove the metal backer from the bezel or is it possible to peel it without bending it?

- Is it best to buy die-cut vinyl and adhere to the metal backing sheet or does someone sell the vinyl already attached to the backer?

- Is there one vendor's vinyl that looks or fits better than others?

I redid the wood grain on my 68 firebird , for the console & the radio face but the stuff I used had a sticky surface os it , but to take it off I used my heat gun & it peeled right off & then I used brake clean to remove the rest of the glue tha was left over on the parts.
