Default Pypes Violator or Race Pro?

I'm considering these 2 mufflers because of their flow characteristics and also their sound. I've read the only difference between them is that the Race Pro has a little bit of sound insulation while flowing the exact same as the Violator.

I still don't know if I want an X pipe yet (which is better for track performance, X pipe or no X pipe?), and I'm not sure if I will end the exhaust before the rear axle or go over it. I'd like to end it before if there is room.

My question is, does the Violator or the Race Pro have the deepest sound? I'm guessing the Race Pro but I just wanted to check. I'm not going for the loudest of these 2, I just want the deepest sounding of the 2, especially at idle. I don't want to piss off all my neighbors at 7am but I also want no compromise at the track. I want people at a cruise-in to dig my idle rumbling thru but not think I'm a dick with the just "look-at-me" exhaust. Which I think where I live, because it's such a huge drag racing town, people here are allot more tolerant of loud exhaust, so long as it sounds good.

I've also heard though that the Violator is directional, and that reversing it reduces some of the higher frequencies and tinniness while being slightly louder than the Race Pro, which sounds great to me. Anyone here have a Violator that they have installed in reverse? I really hate tinniness though, so maybe I'll go with the Race Pros just to be safe. - Thoughts?

Thanks!

I've got 3" Race Pros on my Cutlass. Acceptable at idle, but WAY louder/raspier than I like under heavy throttle.

Do you have an exhaust crossover? I've heard that tones it down a bit.

How does it sound at say 2,800-3K rpm going down the highway? I have about a 30min freeway drive from my place to the drag strip.

I'm willing to deal with the raspiness under hard acceleration just to have the flow at the track. At first I was going to use Flowmaster 40 but then learned how restrictive they are and that they are NOT for racing. But the sound of Flowmasters racing mufflers are just not my thing at all.

i have 3" race pros on my 72 firebird with the pypes 3" X pipe kit with full tail pipes. they are pretty mellow at idle & no real "drone" after about 2000rpm, they quiet down at cruise of 2500+. but they really wake up at wide open throttle! they were quieter at idle than i expected but i love the sound under moderate acceleration.

i dont have any tests to say which is better but all reading ive done says an x-pipe creates more power than a h-pipe or no crossover at all, or at least more torque in the useable powerband. & supposed to quiet the exhaust a little.

i think the violators would have been just a little too much for me... & my neighbors!

I'm starting to wonder that since I think I will be going with an X pipe, if I should go with the Violators instead so I can keep a nice loud idle sound. I think both are crazy loud when you are on the throttle, and I bet the x pipe would help with the higher frequencies and tinniness. If the Violators are still too tinny than I could reverse it like I read about. I just wonder if that would affect flow in any way.

Hmmm, decisions decisions.....

Think I'm just going to go for it and get the Violators with the X pipe. After watching endless YouTube videos for 2 days I'm just done lol.

No crossover. Headers with 3" collectors, 3" pipe to the 3" in/out RacePros, then 2.5" tailpipes over axle.

I may stick an "X" into the system later on.

I had some old Flowmasters on the car, previous to installing these. It was quieter all around with the Flowmasters. It makes a lot more power, though, with the new set up. About 20rwhp better at peak-to-peak, nearly 40hp better at 5200rpm (with the old motor).

71 FB. had 3 inch pypes with x pipe. Violators way loud. Cool at idle but old for myself and the neighbors by the first time I got to the end of the block!
replaced with VT's and I like em.
Very subjective issue.

Marketing is and interesting topic'
"Violators" Sound s like something that could get you in trouble with the law.

Reminds me of a company S-10 truck i use to drive. It had aftermarket shocks called "Bruisers". It road so ruff, I could not drive down a newly paved highway and drink coffee. I had to install stock replacement shocks.

I'm running Doug's headers, into 2 1/2 Pypes siamese style X pipe, into the short body Dynomax Super Turbo's, then tail pipes out the back. 2gen bird.
The combo has a slight drone in a low but narrow rpm range. Its about as loud as a Grumpy Old Guy can handle on a long trip.

I got this response from Pypes in response to an inquiry I made:

"Race pros are the best flowing muffler. They are the nicest sounding at idle and when you get on it, you hear it. There is very little to no drone from these. The violators are the loudest at idle & when you get on it. When people reverse the muffler, yes you will get different sound, but you will have other issues... getting water trapped in the muffler, flow is decreased and will compromise power output on the engine and you will get resonance. The street pros are a multi-chambered muffler and they are louder than the race pros but not as loud as the violator. You will get some resonance out of these mufflers too."

Based on that I'm for sure ordering the Race Pro mufflers and I'm getting the Pypes X pipe as well.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and feedback!

To the OP. Have you considered the Borla xr1 multi-core 40575? I have run the Violator on a previous 70. They flowed great but was too loud for my taste. I have Flowmasters 40 series on the 68, the engine is relatively mild and they are OK. The new 70 engine is quite a different animal and will require something more flow albeit a bit quieter. A BBC friend with about 600 HP and his car with the Borla is quieter than expected. Although a bit pricey, the Borla will be going on the 70

if the Pro V from years ago became the Violators, they have a pretty good drone at about 2500 for me. I do like the sound of the car with them on, I have the Ram air manifolds and the pypes x system..

Have decided not to run the Borla after hearing too much negative feedback about issues with multi-core. Pypes rep recommended their Race Pro. Summit is recommending the Hooker Max flows. Supposedly less idling noise than the Pros and better flowing.

Just MHO. I can tell you one thing. Cherry Bombs have been the best mufflers I've heard over all those mentioned. Quieter and less drone. Laugh all you want but they're quieter than the Pypes mufflers. I've rode in a Pontiac with the Pypes and you couldn't hear the other person with you talk... unless they shouted.

I run with 2 1/2" exhaust, with an H-pipe, and pair of Cherry Bombs. And I don't need hearing aides.

Joe, I have a video with sound on my Cherry Bombs. Send me a PM with your cell phone number and I'll get it off to you via text message.. I can't get my cell phone to hook-up with my computer to email it to you.

you can put an email address where you would put a phone number & "text" it to an email address. most any cell phone will do this.
