[QUOTE=trailwing;5549206]The whole premise behind this project is to be cheap. This is a picture of the engine bay when I picked it up Saturday.

My alternator bracket looks to be missing something? Internet searches reveal different brackets, or do it appears?

Are you reading continuity from engine to frame/body yet? I ask because it's more important than you may realize. If it's missing you run a very real chance of ruining the shifter cable. It'll act as the ground and will actually melt the rubber outer shield to the cable.
If you go out one day and can't get the shifter to move...you'll know you waited too late. Ask me how I and a lot of other folks know.
By the way, I can't remember on the F body but there is, I think, usually another braided wire from the framerail to the passenger's side inner fender.

Good question. The lights worked earlier this week but I bought a braided ground to go between the firewall and engine. I also swapped out the shifter cable today, which was frozen. The instructions said the warranty would be voided if not properly grounded. There is definitely a ground between the frail and the passenger engine mount.

I now believe this is an 80amp alternator. I'm trying to figure out what the missing bracket should look like.

Somewhere near the bottom of Google I read that Firebirds, with air conditioning and a rear window defroster, have a non-adjustable 80 amp alternator. Does anyone have a picture of such a setup?

Turns out that I wasn't missing anything. It's an odd non-adjustable alternator with an idler pulley.

Here is the assembly manuals grounds. Battery to engine. Engine to firewall. And transmission to floorpan.

Did you buy a replacement 80 amp alternator? Your original would have been stamped 1101016.

Do you have a close up picture of the idler pulley? It may be a good idea to replace the bearing before it goes together for good.

Yes, I bought an Autozone alternator. I installed new cooling stuff, shocks, brakes, rotors, painted the wheels and drove it all the way to the neighbors and back.

The bearing in the idler pulley just push's out with a little help from a round bar so you can knock it out. The new one can be pushed back in with a little help from a rubber hammer or a small brass hammer. Be easy. I think all the Pontiac engines should have the 80 amp alt. style adjuster on them. That style keeps the belt from being pulled at an angle better then the other style & is easier on the bearings in the alt. Closest thing to a serp belt style.

Here's another stupid question. My shifter cable thingy (metal sleeve) pops out of the sheath when I pull the shifter back and the cable wraps up. Is it just a crappy shift cable or did I do something wrong?

When I pulled the shifter back into low gear, sometimes the metal sheath popped out, and then instead of pushing the cable in, the cable wraps up. It seems to me that the metal sheath should stay put.thanks for the offer on the shifter, but I do not believe it will fit my console.

Its from a 77 firebird. Is it the his/ her thats throwing you off. Its a regular shifter that can turn into a ratcheting shifter. It's a stock pontiac thing. Some have it some don't. Offer still stands.

That's a good offer. I'd take it if I were you. I believe the factory called it a 'slapstick'...at least that's what I've always called them. If you can push it to the right, it's a slapstick.
Back to your problem, have you changed the shifter cable? There is at least one repop out there that will do what you described. The GM part will work right.

Ya I did notice his metal shaft is really straight too. Were this one has a slight bend. It's boxed up and ready to go. Hopefully all will be good and no more aggregation. Plus you can have fun with the ratcheting part.
