Default Power steering whine

Over the winter, I converted my manual steering to power steering to my ‘70 Judge to make it easier for me to drive (I suffered a brachial plexus injury a decade ago and have limited use of my right arm). The install went relatively smoothly and I had a shop adjust everything and align the car. I’ve only driven the car a couple of times since the conversion and I noticed that the steering box makes a ‘whine’ when you move the wheel, even when sitting still. In addition, the fluid looks awfully low and foamy? Could low fluid alone cause this issue, or could there be something wrong with the rebuilt p/s box.

From my experiences, the noise indicates a pump problem. Go to an auto parts store. Lucas makes a power steer additive/stop leak. That stuff can help!

Wow. That was fast. The pump is brand new. Or at least, reproduced. Pretty sure it came from our sponsor here.

Ugh, that does sound bad.

When you say the fluid looks low, you mean like not registering on the dipstick low? Foamy usually indicates air in the system.

Here is how I do mine.

Make sure the proper fluid level is met.
Remove cap
Start up engine
Turn wheel while running - hold at stop and rev to 2500. (careful, the cap is off) This this on one side then to the other.
Do this 3x
Center when done
Shut off engine

Recheck fluid.

From the Jim Shea Steering Papers.

http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?p=593

No need to run the engine to get the air out. The steering gear acts as a pump when you rotate the wheel back and forth expelling the air.
I have done it this way several times and it works..

And with limited use of your arm, you may want to lift the front tires off the ground to make it easy to turn, lock to lock a couple times.

Make sure you have the correct PS fluid.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll definitely make sir that the proper amount of fluid is in there and will rotate the wheel lock to lock, as described.

Thanks Jim, forgot that small detail. I use Delco power steering fluid in my ElCo.

60's-Early 70s GM Power Steering seems so darn Low-Maintenance. Doesn't it.

Once the system is dialed in its pretty much maintenance free. But sometimes getting it dialed in correctly can be frustrating. I learned a lot from the Steering Papers.

I found a youpulit PS Pressure hose that wrapped UNDER the PS Box, then went to Back of Pump. Currently using that, no weeps, no leads, no high loops.

Hose features a 3/8 steel tubing to do the wrapunder, then exits with rubber flex. Will sport a photo sometime.
