Default Just curious with a turbo question

I know that the 301 is not the greatest engine in the world, even turbo'ed. But I was thinking to myself, is there a way to get the 301 turbo set-up and just move it to a 350/400/455?

I mean thinking of it does not seem that hard to do.

Has this already been done? If so is it cheap enough?

Thanks
Dave

Search on here for "Firechicken" he used two 301 turbos and made some serious power.

Since the 301 is a short deck block, you cannot just "move" the intake part of the Turbo setup to the standard height (350+) block. Also, the 301 ports are siamesed which presents another problem.

Just using a pair of Turbos off the 301 makes some sense, but everything would have to be fab'd.

Here's another way to Turbo a 350+. The TurboForce kits show up on eBay now and again. Or you could copy the layout, but you'd have to use a different pressure hat and that's the tricky part. Anyway, TF made about 450HP on an otherwise stock late 70s 400.

Very cool set-up.Looks easy enough to install as well. I was just kicking the idea around in my head. I am removing an old motor for a newer 350. Thought that if I say one in a junkyard, that it would be possible.

Just the turbo and the carb....

Never know.

I would like to see some more pictures of the Turbo Force though.

Hmm.... 2 301 turbo set-ups. Either 2 big 2 barrels or two small 4 barrels and two turbos.... That might be interesting...

Fab that up to my 67 326.... Could be fun!!!

How much boost can a stock bottom end handle? 8lbs?

Probably more than youd think actually. However I'd upgrade to modern steel rods and forged pistons. FWIW there are more than a few cast crank 2 bolt main 455's at 700-900 hp level living just fine with H beam rods, studded mains, and forged pistons. 3.25" main blocks are not as strong as most 3" main blocks. (most late 70's 350 and 400 blocks are rather weak though. Avoid the late 70's castings ending in 55* like 75 up '557 400 block.

A single 301 turbo on a 326 could be tweaked to a decent power level. However forged pistons are not an off the shelf item for a 326.

A better use of twin 301 turbos is on a 400. Add a set of 4x7H or 6x-8 heads with chambers in the 96-98 cc range(mill to that or a bit less if needed) and flat tops set for zero deck height. With iron heads you want your compression in the 8:1-8.5:1 range. Icon's 890 forged pistons are 2618 material, strong pins, reasonable weight, stronger than SRS and good crown thickness for turbo app, 4.5cc valve relief too. Add a set of 6.625" H-beam rods or a set of PPR's lighter 6.625" 4340 Tomahawk "A" beam rods. Suggest studding the mains but good bolts will probably be fine. Nothing fancy for camshaft needed here an 068 will work as will an 066. With the twin 301 turbo's twin q jets from same application will work but may need jetting changes. Turbo's generally increase pk hp rpm 800-1000 rpm and lower pk tq rpm 4-500 rpm over what same combo would do NA.

"Firechicken"(iirc) ran a 400 cast rod trw 068 combo at @4000 lbs into the 10's shifting at 5000 rpm a very similar combo to above but heavy piston and cast rod. Search posts by him here and PontiacZone. Originally he started with a built 455 but stick shift and no rev limiter and a big oops when the drivetrain broke hurt that motor. The 400 combo he also switched to T400.

Turbo69bird has been in the 9's with a 2 bolt studded 455, 6H heads, cast crank, H-beams, forged pistons, "turbo grind" solid lift cam and a bigger single turbo(T88). rarely ever revs it beyond 6000 rpm. "69GTO"(if I got the name right) similar engine running very low 9's. A 400 should do near as well with the right combo of turbo and water/meth injection and adding an intercooler and running single 4 and blow thru should be able to attain similar results.

fwiw you can buy a brand new BW S475 usually under $700 and certainly capable of 700+ hp at a reasonably safe rpm.

I have a 557 400 in my Tempest now. Right around 400/400. I agree that I would not boost that block as I have seen a few stories of the blocks failing under boost. I have another 71 400 block I am thinking about messing around with. It would be cool to have a pure poncho twin turbo!!!

Thanks!!!
