Hello Everyone,

I don't know much about the big pontiacs and need to get some advice.

I found a 1966 Executive that is in ok shape. Not sure what the guy wants for it, ....what would be reasonable???

I would like to use the motor 389 4bbl, tranny, and rearend for a swap out into my 1966 LeMans.

Now the questions:

I'm sure the motor will drop right in...correct?
Were the automtic transmissions(2 speeds) the same for both models?
Can I swap the differential out? or is it not the same size/width?
If I can't swap the diff, can I swap out the gears?

Any and all information/comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

The motor will swap out. The Tranny is a long tailshaft TH400. You will get 1 more gear out of it but you will have to get a custom driveshaft made. The rearend gears won't interchange either. How bad is the Cheif? Id like to see it. Is it a 2dr or 4dr/ sedan or hardtop?

Joe,

Thanks for the info.

You say the rearend gears will not swap out either...is this because of the housing?

I have not seen the car. I believe it to be a 4 door that is mechanically sound, but the body and frame are questionalbe. I think it has been through some bad NY winters.

If I go check it out, I'll take some digital pictures and send them to you if you want.

Thanks for the input...let me know more about the rearend situation.

Thanks, Dan

Im not totally sure why, but I know the rear end gears will not interchange. A while back there was a huge discussion about Richmond making posi rears for 65 and up big cars. Keep in mind there are a ton of choices for A-body aftermarket posi units. If they would fit then we wouldn't need the overpriced new units. I wish they would, then I wouldn't have to pay so much for a worn out original B-body posi for my big cars.

Take some pics, Id love to see it. I used to have a white '66 Executive 4dr sedan. It was my first car in 1996. My dumbass buddy rearended me with his '70 Chevelle and tore the hell outta both of them. I guess we shouldn't have been skipping school that day.

I want a '65/'66 Executive 2dr. They seem to be pretty rare cars. Not very desireable but rare.

The engine will swap!
However you will need to use the oil filter housing from the Lemans. (The one with the tilt toward the engine)
Forget the Long tail Th400 and Either use a Th350 (Best choice) or a Short tail Th400 for a trans.
The rear Diff will not work.
Take the time to find a Nice A-body rear.
(Chev,Buick,Olds,Pontiac)

Usually I'm found working on my Pontiac. If you want to find me Look for the white picket fence and all the old Pontiacs parked outside. And the half dissembled engine sprawled all over the driveway!

Guys,

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it. Somehow I thought I could use both the tranny and rear...now I know.

If I get by the guys place, I'll take some pics and send them to you Joe. The guy said he did a lot mechanically to the car, but the body and frame may be another story.

Maybe we could do a deal..I'll take the engine, you can have the rest?

Thanks again,,,,Dan

I don't need anymore rusty cars. Im buying a '66 Bonne 4dr with no motor soon. Only reason Im getting it is, its like my beloved 4dr that got smashed a few years back, and this thing is nice!

done this a few times, you need the lemans exhaust manifolds, move the trans crossmember back approx. 6inches,use the shift lever off your 2 speed[you will have one gear below L on the column]the oil filter adapter off the 326 and shorten the driveshaft, hope this is helpful, thanks
