Oh, you mean how tall are the tires...

245/50/17's should be about 26.6" and the 215/55/17's about 26.3", depending on the actual tire, but those numbers should be within a tenth or two.
I LOL on that one.

That is pretty tall tire. Would like to see a side shot of the fronts and how close to the fender they are.

Sorry, I couldn't resist The Kumho 245/50/17 are 26.7" tall and 10.3" wide. The 215/55/17 are 26.3" tall and 9.2" wide. The only pictures I have with the tires on is with the car on jacks because they are still putting it back together. It is not a good shot and doesn't show the fender clearance but it looked like there would be plenty of room. I originally wanted a 225/55/17 on the front so the height would match the back (26.8" tall 9.6" wide) but Champ and B-Man talked me out of it because the extra width and height would have caused clearance issues.

If you need pictures of it with it on the ground let me know. I have a thread "We finally have paint" http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=794451 where I post pictures as they complete different parts of the car and I can post pictures of the wheels once it gets back on the ground.

Thanks,

Yes once its on the ground I would like to see how close those tires are to the back of the fender. Also when you turn the wheel how much clearance there is.

I have my notes on my car still stock with 14" rims. It would be nice to compare.

Glad you took it the way I intended...

Actually, for a GTO, both front and rear are shorter than the OE 7.50x14 - which was about 27" tall. Tall and skinny back in the day!

It is interesting to me why wheel manufacuters make different wheel styles with different BS than other styles. Hopsters vs torque thrust, torque thrust vs salt flats.

Most of them are a bit shy on backspacing.

Makes you wonder who's doing the design work on some of them. Clearly some of them have never bolted a wheel on a car, considering the shallow backspacing dimensions offered on so many custom wheels intended for classic muscle and pony cars.

Not 17's but this is what 16 x 8 Boyd wheels look like on my 65 with 245/50-16 on all 4 corners. They JUST clear my 98-02 F-Body brakes I put on after this picture was taken.

Got it back today, WOOHOO!!! Now the fun begins, why do I feel so overwhelmed The car is sitting really high but it has no interior, gas tank, and the springs are brand new. I am going to get it back together, get the front end aligned, and drive it some to see if it comes down. If not, lowering springs and tubular control arms are in its future. Front 215/55/17 on 17x7, rear 245/50/17 on 17x8.

Dale

I know you posted it elsewhere, but refresh our memories... What BS on the wheels?

I ordered my plain steel 17x7" Wheel Vintiques Series 62's with 4.625" BS and am considering either 225/50/17 or 215/55/17 fronts to go with either 235/55/17 or 245/50/17 rears. The wheels are at the powder coating shop now.

Even with the interior installed, I think the front end needs to come down. Rear might be good with the gas tank and interior installed, but the front will be higher even though your front tires are .4" shorter than the rears.

The front 17x7 had 4.75" BS. American Racing recommended 4.5" BS with these wheels and tires on this car and with the disc conversion I added an extra 1/4". For stock size tires they recommended 4" BS. The rear are 17x8 and I did 5.75" BS. American racing recommended 5" BS with these wheels and tires and then I added 1/2" for a wider 69 rear end and 1/4" for the disc conversion. For stock size tires they recommended 4.5" BS. The rear wheels are centered nice in the wheel well which would allow me to go with even a wider tire on the back in the future if I decide to do so. If I stick with the 245s then a 5.5" BS would have been fine, close, but fine. I don't think 255s would have worked with a 5.5" BS, if it does it would be really close.

I like the 245/50/17 on the rear. I was wanting the 225/55/17 for the front but was afraid the taller/wider tire would have caused problems. There is plenty of room with the 215/55/17. Right now they look a little small in the front with the front so high but I hope they will look better when I lower the front. Right now the front is 3.5" too high and the rear is 1" too high. I am not worried about the rear but I think the front will need new parts. Just what I need to do is spend more money on this car

High Risk what did you do to lower your car? I think I have the same situation on suspension.

Thanks

Greg.

Greg,
I ended up cutting 1 coil off of the front coil springs and it brought it down to where I wanted it. The rear did not need anything. I am going to leave it there for now. Someday if I decide to upgrade the front upper and lower control arms I might replace the springs with more modern performance springs. But for now I am very satisfied with the stance. The last picture is the car before I put the interior in and before I cut the springs. Hope this helps.

I was at Des Moines Good guys and saw a 64 convert with 225/50/17 on the front and 250/50/17 on the back every thing looked great. He even had the same wheels I am using. But I can't find anybody else on here that is using those tire sizes. I ordered the fronts to see if they would work. They are made to order so I am sweating, they should be here Thursday so maybe I can get them mounted and see if they fit.

I originally wanted the 255/50/17 but only could find 255/45/17 in the tires I wanted and those are too short
