Default Island Dragway - Nostalgia Spring Fling - May 23rd

NYGTO, Straycat and I (Daubert20) ran our Pontiacs at Island a couple weeks back. NYGTO brought his Blue Charcoal 65 GTO, Straycat brought his Reef Turquoise 65 Tempest and I brought my Burgundy 65 GTO. We also had another car show participant park next to us with his Red 65 GTO. It made for a really neat pit area at a nostalgia event.

After travelling from an hour away in opposite directions, NYGTO and I ended up arriving one after the other! What are the chances?

NYGTO and I ran in Nostalgia 4 for 14 seconds and slower cars. Straycat ran in Nostalgia 3 for cars from 13 to 14 seconds.

In the first round the fans were treated to the best race of the day as NYGTO and I were paired up since our ET's in time trials ended being close out of the 8 car field. I ran a personal best of 14.298 at 97.22 but brokeout on a 14.50 dial to a winning 14.234 at 99.44. NYGTO went on to win N4 and took out a track regular driving a mustang in the final! A GTO in the winners circle!!!

Straycat made it to the third round in Nostalgia 3 with consistent 13.60's and some incredible reaction times!

We all had a blast and I can't wait to race again. It was my first time racing after a couple of test and tunes. I learned a lot (my engineering brain is spinning) and feel like I am finding some consistency with more track time. Sounds funny after owning a car for 33years!

Great job. I bet it was a blast with a mix of 65s. Always had a soft spot for the 65 since my brothers first muscle car was a burgundy 65 back in 1970.

What a beautiful brace of Pontiacs there.

This post is what finally gave me the nudge to sign up.
I have just started lurking on this forum even after knowing it existed for a bit.
Island is my home track and I'm glad you had a good outing.

I race a '79 AMC Spirit GT each week in Pro-Bracket Class.
It runs 11.10's at about 118 MPH and is a pretty consistent little unit

The Pontiac connection is my '79 TA
- 455 with Fitech FI
- TKO 600 with a .82 fifth gear and 3.08 rear
- subframe connectors and other chassis stuff
- Mechanical work is done and the bodywork is in progress.

Here is a picture of before I started the bodywork in Fall of 2019.

The prep is done.
I have the shell painted, doors and fenders on and the hood mounted
Just waiting on the weather in Northern NJ to get good enough to finish it in my garage here.

Great site here
JT

Great pics and so cool to see those 65s together. Nothing cooler than driving your car to the track to race. You guys should try an Outlaw Pontiac race when they come to Cecil

Not this year StrayCat. First year of retirement, so everything is still getting straightened out.

I just checked Island Drags website. Old Daze Drags are Sept 12th. I am going to try to talk Terry into this race day.

Hope to see you all there!

Default Nostalgia Day

I just saw this thread,

Yes!

it was a very good day at the track and of course winning was a plus, but even so, all the cars ran great and pitting at ground zero for Pontiac's with all the people was even better.

I do admit, beating those nice guys with the Mustang was fun but, I cut a few good lights that day just like them :--)

Racing on those whitewalls can be tricky, I basically avoid the water box, find the last hot groove from the prior race and leave just off idle or around 1800 if the grip is there.

I see there's an Ol Daze event for September 12 and another Nostalgia Fall event on October 10. I'll be there and maybe I'll run my 1965 automatic.

Jason, thank you for organizing and including. I'm looking forward to next time.

It's my pleasure. It was a great day and I am really looking forward to the next opportunity to get everyone together and race.

Foxgap - I've seen you guys run at Beaver Springs Nostalgia Nationals. What a car! We love 61's, a pic of my Pop's 61 attached...

This must have been a late addition to the Island schedule. It caught me by surprise and unfortunately I already made other plans. Will be there only if those other plans fall through.

Keep an eye on the weather....
