73 SD TA at RK Motors
Has anybody seen this car..it looks familiar. White 73, dark red guts and no hood bird. Called RK yesterday for more "detailed" info and after speaking with them, no call back. I have a good friend in the market for a clean 73SD - any clean 73's out there???

My 73 SD is at the Mecum Anheim CA Auction and will be Auctioned off this Saturday. You can read about it on the last couple of pages on this forum. Lot#S138...p.s I have a Very low Reserve on her. The only reason for selling is I bought a industrial property and need the cash. The car is amazing.

See if I can get some blood flowing here!
Doing some digging, looking, cogitating, etc. Here's a pic of the early engine codes for 1973. Notice no XD/ZJ SD codes? (also no Y8/W8) At the bottom it says W8 & Y8 use hardened iron foot (lifters) Now in the pic from HPP article from years ago: Look closely at the driver head: Y8 I think most people assumed it was a 1974 model SD engine? Look at the hanger paperwork: It says 1973 at the top of the paper. (plus the usual SD stuff elsewhere) The engine behind it is a 350 of course, but that code is for a 1973 350. (none in 1974 with that code) I have quite a few EUNs for K112 cast date Y8's (and other early date codes like that) So, 1st they are more than likely pre egr fiasco 2nd they would not probably have the partial VIN on them 3rd they must have been removed from the engine line for rework ( Would they have the 1st style cam probably?) 4th Since they had Y8 (and W8?) on them they could not be used in 1973 cars Now on the thread here: 1973 Y Code SD Would his SD be a Y8 or the XD? Also, would the 'Y8/W8' engines be held until the 1974 model year? (after rework- intake, cam maybe, etc) Just think if the EPA hadn't found the egr problem (or found it a lot later) how much power the SD would have made? (along with it being in the GTO, etc possibly) Just wish I could have been there in the plant back then.

Dayum.....only half of what the car "sold" at RK motors.
Seems that the SD cars don't do well at auctions and all other makes get the SOLD bidder.. |

Pontiacs in general never do good at auctions. I don't know why anyone even wastes their time taking them to auctions.

One thing I do know is if the SD did get into the 73 GTO they would have been a lot faster then the T/A's at the time because of the weight difference. My 73 GTO has a dry weight of 3420 when I bought it. The 73 GTO's were really light for the size of the car because the GTO didn't have all the insulation & if you did like mine get it with no A/C & no real power options they are / were really light. Thats why in 4/72 cars made it the performance car of the year, of course that was the one tested with the SD in it. too.

With Pre Production Engines their was no Partial VIN as that was stamped to the original driveline prior to the SD being tested.
So if the SD test car carried no partial VIN would the XD or Y8 have been assigned to the block or was it blank and what about date codes in the casting. Were these Cast with the block also or left blank. |

I had thought that the EUN and manifest code (engine code like Y8) were stamped at the beginning of the the engine 'build'. (73 EUN's run in order for their VIN sequence and 74 have their own sequence) So, that engine on the lift would have a Y8 and EUN on it along with the little sticker for the assembly line guys. But if they were sent back and reworked, how did they 'erase' the stamped info? I looked at all the EUN's I have on SD engines. They do not appear to have been stamped at time of engine build. Unless the bare blocks themselves sat until ready to put in a car. But that engine on hoist I would think should have an EUN, engine code and possibly a VIN if they had a Firebird waiting on it? I have a lot of Y8's with a block casting dates of Kxx2. Actually very few with a 74 cast date. These being a very special engine and probably the only production engine to be hand built, may make this all an anomaly.

Thanks for the blowup, Horst.
That's what I did and saw the 1973 at the top of it. ___________↓↓↓↓↓ PS: Do you think this contains the decals and stuff that would go on the car - radiator baffle, valve cover, etc?
